Hi Folks,
Just a quick question about the correct gearbox oil for a 2003 terrano 2 TDI manual, I have been advised from one motor parts supplier it should be EP80w90 Gear oil.

Another motor spares supplier suggested some other very expensive (£10 per Litre) stuff?

Any clarification greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
John

it should be EP80w90 Gear oil.gl4 do not use gl5.just done mine. its a bugger to refill it was suggested to run a hose thro engine bay down to filler.if like mine its never been changed make sure your inside or not windy. i ended up with a face full.from new nissan fill gearbox transferbox with atf.

Didnt know about the atf thing? Is that in manual boxes too??? Since changing my oil the lever is really stiff when the oil is cold, especially when going into 1st.. gets better after a few miles but thinking of changing it for a thinner oil? what came out (from cold) was like water when I changed it so was a much thinner oil in there?:eek:

If you mean ATF as in Automatic Transmission Fluid.....? I think its a different oil....

Funny you should say that mines stiff first thing in the morning (gear shift).
ok once warm. i thought it was to do with the poly bush on gear stick as i removed it to pour oil in. mine was like water that came out. thats when i was told probably atf.

has anyone looked in the owners handbook? I can find mine out if you pester me :thumb2

for manual gearbox API GL-4 and the viscosity for all weather conditions is:
75w-90 or 80w-90, there are a few other grades listed but mostly for limited temperature ranges e.g. straight 80w will do from -29 to 30 degrees C, but the two multi-grades mentioned will cover from -29 to 40 :thumb2

thats what i have. perhaps need to do a nice long journey hammer its guts a bit.

Hum... if i believed in them I'd have thought it could be a coincidence but I dont, so I wonder why mine is really difficult to select gears in first thing in the morning too? Once I've done a few miles its fine but the first two or three miles are hard work.

That was why I though I'd change the gearbox oil to see if it improved any, seemed an obvious start!

Thanks to those who have helped me identify the correct oil.

Anyone with ideas on why gears might be difficult to select untill the vehicle has warmed up would be greatly appreciated?
Thanks again
John

Had a new clutch fitted 2/3 weeks back gear selection fine. but i decided to drop gearbox oil. as soon as the new was in selection was difficult.i dont mind dropping it again but what should i use dont want to keep wasting cash.i suppose whats in at the mo can go in trannybox and front diff.

Molyslip?

when the oil is a bit thick like when it is cold the syncro rings do not lock so well to the hub so =difficult change, to be a bit pedantic the syncro rings are tapered brass rings that are often called baulking rings as all the time they are being turned by the hub with any force they baulk (stop) the gear change, only when they have "synchronized" the speed of the hub and the gear will they allow the change to take place, thick oil slows this process down, Rick

oops :augie:augie I put an addative in! Said it was ok for all gearboxes (is designed for gearboxes) but suspect the oil is just too thick ATM? I may go for a lower weight and see if that makes a difference?

Never ever put Molyslip (graphite) into a syncro gearbox it is good for the bearings etc but stops the syncro action, Rick

How so Rick? Just curious.....

EDIT: answered my own question; synchro needs friction which Molyslip destroys....which is why we shouldn't stick it in the LSD either!
