Since my Maverick has been living an icy cold winter in the pyrennees its been having trouble starting or more often than not is not starting at all! I have doubts that the battery I inherited with it (70Ah) is the correct standard battery that its meant to have? I've called several suppliers. Some have consulted their computers & others have not but they all seem to have different opinions of what I should have! The most reliable offer up until now would seem to be a "Banner 100Ah" but another is saying that a 70Ah is not only sufficient but what is recommmended! What batteries are YOU all using on your Mavericks & Terranos!? Which is the standard battery fitted?

A 95 Ah battery is the best option, with around 800 cranking amps.

Bearing in mind that a diesel really needs juice for starting, not running, a 'red top' is also an excellent if slightly more expensive option. It has lower Ahs (about 50 typically) but higher cranking amps.

Nah, you want a Numax CVX 113 amps, 1000 cranking amps , 500 cycles, and it'll fit in the battery tray and only £85 :thumbs

Numax CXV27MF got a pair of em on - big capacity and big cranking, but not the big price of an Optimax red or yellow top.

But then I've got a few extra electrics to run

But the '500 cycles' is the giveaway Pete. Its a leisure battery (yes, for a tin tent my son!) designed for deep cycling (i.e. almost or completely discharged), which a car battery isn't subjected to (unless your name is Terranus with all his gadgetry LOL).

If you read this little note below you'll see why your Numax is so apparently 'oversized'...

Automotive batteries will generally fail after 30-150 deep cycles if deep cycled, while they may last for thousands of cycles in normal starting use (2-5% discharge).

If batteries designed for deep cycling are used for automotive applications they must be "oversized" by about 20% to compensate for their lower current carrying capacity.

So I rest my case, a standard 95 Ah car battery with 750-800 cranking amps is way more than adequate.

I'll have the cold cranking any day mate:D
Also you cant sniff at 85 squid and they dont leak when, er, one falls over :lol
Two on mine now one inside for winch and power amp and lights etc
Got one of mine off flea bay £35 :naughty

you can't cod a codder mate!

eeeuuuwwwww no need to swear at me
I've been using marine batteries for years, I do boats ya know, and there's nawt so bloody hard to start as old outboards after their winter nap :augie
So there :p

Thats right they're not leisure they are dual purpose/marine.

Ordinary leisure batterires aren't up to modern motor movers (powerful electric motors, just like a starter motor) hence the move the these dual purpose even for tin tents.

Cheers boss, I feel a move to the front of the class

The 95amp battery is the standard for the TDI. Read up on other threads too as the starters seem to give a fault like a flat battery when they're buggered too. Also check your battery cables are OK where they attach to the battery terminals as these too restrict the juice going to the starter. As do the earth strap where it bolts to the engine.

Trex I do like your dual battery setup mate, I've now ended up with two batteries but can't fit the second as the AC pipes are in the way. Standard battery is about half inch too big:doh

Starter or Battery?

At first I thought it was the heater plugs & suspected the starter. It starts fine if the suns been shining on it or if it's been parked in a garage and once it's been started & run a bit can be stopped & started again without probs. Really does seem to be a question of temperature.

The Varta catalogue says that you need a G8 Blue Dynamic which is rated at 95 amp hours/830 cold cranking amps. Great batteries, guaranteed for 4 years and sealed just in case you want to turn your truck upside down!

As an indication of price I sell these for £93 on ebay, but you should be able to get one locally.

I agree that if you're going to use a battery for auxiliary equipment like winches/sound systems etc then you should go for one with deep cycle ability or you risk the battery not coming up again after a deep discharge.

Best regards,
Ian.

I don't want to throw a spanner in the works but these are the symptoms that one or two on here including me have suffered and indeed the heater plugs were my first thoughts too. I replaced the battery which in all fairness I didn't trust the supplier that it had been bought from a couple of years ago. Unfortunately this didn't work either but at least I have a battery I can trust. So I got the price and where I could buy a starter locally. Set about trying to replace starter myself but it was too cold for me to work outside so gave up. Phoned a local garage who said fine get it to us and we'll sort it for you. So tried to start and it would barely turn over. Got my teenage son out of his pit to help push, just as he got to the door I tried cranking again and sure enough it started.

If your unsure of battery then yes go ahead and replace but bare in mind it may possibly be the starter (two types of starter bosche and summat else but it'll say on side of starter if needed).

See Ya

Thanks Jiml! I did consider the starter but as when I charge the bettery it starts in the blink of an eye at least the first time. I was leaning more towards the battery or perhaps the alternater, god forbid! Any idea of the price if thats the case and Incidently what was the cost of the starter?

With the engine running you should be able to measure a little over 14V at the battery. If you can chances are the alt is fine.
If you don't know much history of battery then try it. Certainly the 70amp is a bit on the small side.

I paid £140 for a genuine bosche recon starter.
