Wheel Wobble

I have changed the tyres on my Terrano all 4 of them, had them balanced, checked the tracking and it has just come out of my mates garage after he has stripped it down checked all the steering linkages, track rod ends, drop links, idler arm and every other ball joint under the car, and I'm still getting a wheel wobble at speeds of 60 - 70 mph
he says it still feels like it could be a tyre problem,
has anybody on here had the same sort or a similar problem that they have found the answer to, and can you pass it on to me. Please, Please

It's driving me crazy (and wobbling on the way)

I have alloys, the two front tyres were renewed and balanced by what I thought was a good tyre fitter, he took time and even asked me to return after several days to re-check the balance, he re-adjusted them,even so I have a wobble about the same speed as yours. In my opinion now it appears to be the fact of alloy wheels being a problem.

Mine are also Alloys, I thought that maybe there was a chip out of the actual alloy causing it but I have been re-assured that the alloys themselves are OK, I've had the wheels balanced when the tyres were put on in the garage and I have also gone into a local Kwik-Fit dealer and paid to have them re-balanced again, but it's still the same -banghead- It's a real nightmare :evil:

How do I know and how do I check if the tyres are faulty, and what rights have I got as to changing them :?: :?: :?: :|

I had similar problem some years ago.
After repeated wheel balances and inspections of all steering and suspension parts I finally "persuaded" a service manager ( who had declared that there was no problem) to take a lengthy test drive on a motorway with me as passenger. The look of surprise on his face when, eventually, he got the wobble at about 65mph was a picture.
It turned out to be a faulty tyre which distorted at speed. It seems that the balancing was done properly but at fairly low revs and this unusual structural tyre problem was such that it needed some road work with heat and centrifugal force before it showed up.
The wobble wasn't drastic and it settled out quickly by reducing speed.
I'm not saying that your problem is the same sort of tyre problem but it caused the same sort of frustration. Luckily mine was a leased company car and there was no damage to my wallet but unfortunately I got no detailed explanation about the tyre problem. I just know that they replaced one and it was OK afterwards.
Hope you get to the bottom of your problem OK.

i am sure H/B had a simmilar experience, the fact that they just wont balance up and keep wobbling must mean something? i think i would be pushing for replacement tyres!

I took the car back today and I mentioned to the Supervisor on duty what had been said regarding Tyres possibly having a defect but he wouldn't have any of it, he said we re-balance the tyres first to see what we get, on driving the car home, sometimes the wobble would appear then later at the same speed it would be fine.

I am now at the end of my tether, -banghead-
I will have to phone this garage again and tell them to see what they say, hopefully they will suggest a remedy (as opposed to telling me to bugger off)

Not me, mine balanced up with very little weight considering they're big mud tyres and seem to have stayed that way.

Might be worth looking at tracking. ball joints and bearings again.

I just had all those checked out before I took it back for re-balancing and it came back A1 OK, mechanic said it was one of the best cars he'd seen for a 96 model (I was best pleased to hear that too)

anyway, i was havng new tyres fitted to a van today expensive michelin mund and snow, (£114 each trade) the fitter noticed what appeared to be a leak in one tyre, so dipped it in water and guess what?

a brand new expensive tyre with a split about 10mm in the side wall!

must have been a manufacturing fault!

so tyres can be faulty!

if he refuses to listen, shake him warmly by the throat and ask him again, but be polite this time :wink: :lol:
