I'm afraid I have a bit of an adversion to them, but I really fancy a set on my Terrano as long as they're not going to put too much stress on the bearings and cause problems.
No doubt many on here will have experience of these, Do they cause bearing trouble or any steering problems
The one's that I was thinking of are 38mm per side, Is that too much ????
Your opinions appreciated:)

Chris

you would be better off using other wheel rims with a bigger offset. and will possibly work out cheaper.

but

it puts massive strain on the only downside of these trucks , and thats the steering bearings are adjustable type .

but unless you go mad with the tyres an idler brace from makeitfit should prevent steering bending

Many thanks.
Think I might go for the wheel option, at least then if I sell the vehicle I'll have the set of original wheels and tyres to put back on it.

whats behind it chas, is it for looks or functionality?

A bit of both I suppose, I don't do any really rough stuff but do tend to drive along some farm tracks that are rutted, albeit fairly shallow ruts, but the Terrano tends to sit in the rut one side with the other side right on the crest.
If it's a bit greasy you suddenly get a sharp side shift of about a foot as the wheels try to reverse there positions so to speak, I was hoping that widening my wheel track a bit might help alleviate this problem by putting both wheels in the ruts so it doesn't suddenly drop off the edge.
Not a big problem but one that my previous vehicles haven't seemed to suffer from.
Also the vanity thing rears it's head:eek: the wheels will come out an inch or so each side and still be inline with the mud flaps to avoid unwanted splatting of the bodywork.
Will I encounter any other problems by doing this if I decide to ???

Edit; I do also want to go to slightly wider tyres, from 235's to 255 or 265's.

Thanks.

Chris:)

I think its a function of the fact that the Terrano is much more car-sized than a lot of 4x4s and has a relatively narrow track. On the plus side, with really wide ruts like that it often better to ride them off-centre and avoid grounding out.

And honestly, is 3" going to make all that much difference?

From what I've seen of folks who have done serious mods, problems invariably follow.....TBH the standard truck is already highly capable and a decent set of AT or MT tyres will make a big difference.

The offset might help to prevent big tyres (31") from the occasional wheel arch contact, but the same can be achieved, as Extreme says, with bigger offset wheel from a Hilux, Shogun etc...99% of 6-stud Jap wheels bolt straight on.

See if you can get some patrol steel wheels off ebay

Thanks for all the replies, certainly food for thought.
The last thing I want is a load of trouble, so I'm going to ponder:eek:
One thing I didn't mention earlier is that these ruts are normally driven by my other half, at night with no lights, me in the passenger seat with a night vision rifle scope against my right eye, when the truck suddenly lurches sideways it's a bit like someone wacking the barrel end on with a plank, it hurts:D
Maybe altering some old habits might prove to be a cheaper option:banghead

Thanks again.

bloody hell, wouldn't want to be driving anything in the dark with that poking in my eye....

38mm on each side sounds quite a lot, and will definitely put a much bigger strain on the wheel bearings. I would suggest you stay with 235 section tyres, and go for General Grabber AT2's. Just fitted 4 on my truck and they perform really well and are cheaper than BF Goodrich AT's.
