Has anyone fitted wheel spacers on their T2?

Does anyone know of any for sale for a reasonable price?

Cheers

Hi bambam  Blueblull had some up for sale so you could send him a PM to see if he's still got them or not

Is the fitting of fitting wheel spacers classed as a modification for vehicle insurance purposes. Seem to remember reading somewhere that it is :?:

Asked my insurers about it but they said they would have to consult their underwriters. That was about two months ago---the silence has been deafening. They are still consulting apparently. Wish they were as slow to take my premium
So ---- has anyone any reliable info on this?
Was thinking of widening my stance (no comments please) but not if it involves getting tangled up with insurance issues.

why tell the insurance people? just say vehicle like it when bought and never had reason to question the style of it

seriously, does the addition of spacers add any benefits to the handling of the vehicle? or is it just cosmetic?

i did like the idea of fitting them, but from what im heard, mavs/terranos like eating wheel bearings. wheel spacers put extra stress on your wheel bearings and other suspension components, but then i suppose it depends of what width you want to go for. i was looking at a set of 10mm spacers, link

Hi Folks I had 32mm wheels spacers fitted to my T2 before I got my 33's and they worked great and looked awesome, you did notice a small amount of difference especially the turning circle and taking a corner a little faster. I did say to my insurance company about them and they said no problems and I dont think they charged me anymore on my policy. I bought them from super crooks and in the region of £160

Hi GoonerCarp.
Perhaps there is a bit of cosmetic appeal but I am more interested in counteracting the top-heavy characteristic of the waggon. Seems to me that by spreading its feet a bit wider apart it will be a bit more footsure. Not talking about much, just perhaps 10mm per wheel so long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg

Thanks for your thoughts about turning circles etc one and all.

Hi Chaster,

I can understand that, will seriously consider it now, all for better handling

If you use the 10mm spacers, be aware that you are reducing the thread engagement of the wheel nuts by 10mm.
For safety reasons check !!

2nd the wheel comment i was a bit stunned 1st time i took wheel off there short enough as it is without effectivly shortening by another 10mm

Saw some 10mm spacers on ebay. Emailed supplier to ask if they are suitable for T2 and if they needed longer studs. Reply was that they should be suitable and longer studs should not be needed. (Please note the "SHOULD"s---nothing positive ).Found this unreassuring.
Went to my waggon and checked thread lengths on wheel nuts. Turns out to be 13mm, give or take a gnats whisker. This would of course leave only 3mm of thread engagement if 10mm spacers were fitted. Seems VERY DODGY to me. Certainly nothing I would contemplate.
Emailed them back to ask if they realised about the shortfall in thread contact and asked for their advice. Awaiting their reply. (my second email was sent about 17.15 today so they may have gone home).
My doubts are reinforced and seconded by the comment above from RUSTIC.
I'm posting this now before waiting for the ebayers reply because I feel alarmed that the product could be a source of potential danger for the unwary and also, I may not get a reply !

PS. Faith in human nature restored--- It's 21.00 and just had a reply from seller informing me that I would indeed need longer studs in order to get at least five full turns on wheelnuts.

Seems to me that extra long bolts would need increased diameter too. Surely there are stress issues which are complex and a "can of worms". Not going down that road . Shall put spacers onto the back burner until someone asks me what I would like for my birthday then try for the proper expensive ones.

well if bluebell had 32mm on he mustve had longer studs fitted by supercrooks coz the maths dont work!

Hi Jace.
The Ebay units I saw were only about £16 a pair, just disc type spacers nothing more.
Perhaps the spacers Bluebull had were the more business-like and more costly items which actually fit onto the existing studs and come with extra wheel bolts with the kit.
This way the maths would be OK.

ah got ya just thought if they stocked longer studs could be answer

Safe penetration for wheel nuts is ussually taken to be 1½ times the stud diameter. T2/Mav studs are 12mm, therefore penetration should be 18mm, which is about the depth of the steel wheel nuts (inc the taper) for those that have them. 5 turns would not be very much on our nuts as they have a fine thread compared to most.
