Trying to figure out why the temp guage doesn't move, I popped the bonnet for a quick explore before ordering thermostats/temperature senders etc etc.

I can see 2 cables going into the unit that houses the thermostat, what do each of them do?

I'm guessing the further forward, arrowed one, might be the temp sender (?). The cables fractured so I guess/hope that explains why the gauge doesn't move....

Back to work now.. I'll have to look more closely later.

Cheers guys!

Ian

Ok... it appears that the upper, non arrowed, connector is the temp sensor....
So what on earth is the lower, arrowed one?

Two Pin connector is for the ECU
Single pin is for the gauge AFAIK

Yeah thats the sender for the guage - the one behind it is the temp sensor for the ECU.

Guys, you're brilliant! Thank you. :)

That would explain perfectly why the gauge doesn't move. Hopefully it's just the broken connector & the sender unit is ok.

Sorry, a further question.... Would that have any effect on the heater in the cabin (only blows hot air, much like myself!)?

Cheers

Ian

No thats likely to be a rod or cable off or something broken inside the heater. The knobs control flaps that divert the air around (cold) or through (hot) the heater matrix. You can see the cables moving on the outside of the heater box in the footwell IIIRC

HA HA

Knobs and flaps, What all that about. :lol

Have fitted the new sender & temp gauge goes through the roof :(
The motorfactors I used didn't have a part number for the 2.7tdi but assured me it was the same as the 2.4 petrol. Are they right? it seemed to make sense to me at the time.
P'raps I still need to change the thermostat......

Opinions welcome! ...... & thanks again guys.

Ian.

does it go through the roof immediatly? ifit does, then i am sure thats not right, it takes a while for these cars to warm up, let alone raise the temp to critical! I could be wrong, but i dont see how the sensor can be the same as the petrol one, but......

It rises pretty quickly....

I'd imagine (& I stand to be corrected) that coolant temperatures are or should be pretty similar, regardless of fuel type...... ????

Aaarghhhh...... this was supposed to be a cheap & easy run around/ fun car. I've had a bigger headache & spent more on it in a fortnight than on the 2 Mercs in years! :( However, now I've started, I'll finish!

the joys of jap built cars:augie be like new when you finish fixing things:) i know had few little jobs had to be done on mine...... dose the engine seem rather hot when the gauge is at it top? try taking the termostat out and run it with out it engine should only warm up a little...... that tell you if the termostat is f..ked and put it in some boiling water to see if it opens!
