whats the best nissan for towing a caravan

Hi guys just bought my first caravan and drove from stowmarket in suffolk to home in surrey last night wow !! It's a 23ft twin axle 6 berth Abbey.

I towed it with my 2.7 tdi lwb at speeds of 55 - 60 mph which was fine temp gauge never moved from halfway.

Myonly problem came when I had to got up any kind of incline I had my foot flat too the floor and found myself slowing down to 40-45 mph with lorrys passing me !!

Next year I am driving down to Switzerland with the caravan and I'm wondering if I should get a bigger more powerful truck?
I've been thinking of getting a patrol but done a bit of research on them and not sure which one would be best suited to my needs.

Also the 2.8 td6 version is only. 130 bhp which isn't much more than my T2 but the later 3.0 Di has 160 bhp but only a 4 cylinder engine.

Any other trucks worth mentioning if poss guys as I don't want to blow the T2 up with the extra wright load.

Any help would b great.

having had a2.7 tdi t2, a 3.0 tdi patrol with 'issues'

and gone back to a 2.7 tdi t2, btw my spectrum t/a
is 20 foot body and 1700kg it does it with ease.

might have to dig down the box, but so what.

sometimes better so slow on climbs and theres
a descent after summit.

think if wanted more umph, would look at tuning
the t2, chips are available to take it upto the 160 bhp
of the 3 litre.

the 3.0 is great when its working but a pig to
maintain, i ve got the bills to prove!

member plank has a 2.7tdi swb t2 van and towed
tintents at 2800kg gross, if he doesnt respond its
likely he is out there now with one!

I did a couple of long trips in a T2 2.7 running on vege towing a pageant limousin twin axle (around 1650kg if i recall) no problems whatsover other than similar to yours because the t2 is not an inherently fast car.

So............. at the risk of incurring the wrath of nissan owners everywhere i would suggest if you want more power look further afield.

I did and eventually went for a 2002 grand cherokee 2.7crd which was a breath of towing grunt fresh air and contrary to urban myth doesnt cost anymore than a t2 to run and is at least as reliable (subject of course to you starting off with a good un).

The reason i dint go fora troll was because i got similar grunt and a higher level of comfort all round for my dosh. Im now on my 2nd one,fitted with a 3 litre merc diesel, which is proving to be even better than the first :thumb2

tending to agree with Daved there.

as wouldnt be getting a pathfinder or navara,
too much renault in them...

well not unless could find one of the v6 petrol
versions from launch anf lpg it!

funny the r20 was tug of choice on various
carvan clubs we attend, now as they are ageing
I note the kia sorrento is eating into the following.

suspect the kia reliability and 7 year warranty is
attractive.

i like the jeep stuff, its just for us we wanted a
7 seater, pity as gc has big enough boot for third
row.

hi its a p reg i think 96 plate 2.7 tdi touring se lwb round headlights model

just been looking round at reviews and if i can mod mine a bit i may keep it as it looks like even the td5 landies struggle with caravans up hills.

check the maf, its the plug to left of air filter.

looking for inscription of bosch or hitachi.

generally the bosch ones are easier to chip.

but is it worth it,

cost of mod,
cost of insurance
more fuel as become throttle happy lol

i'd make sure its service and tuned as well
as factory spec.

give it more gas when it needs stir that
gearbox.

as long as still gets you there whats a few mph
on a hill, maybe a few minutes on journey, tops
and spend cash on something else.

just a thought, having been there done that
andf gone back to the old 2.7, which is pretty
bullet proof, even if mpg can be improved
with new trucks, going to take a lot of a few
mpg here and there to balance.

The jeep commander is based on a grand cherokee and has seven seats as well as retainig the 3.5t tow + quadratrac :thumb2

For a seven seater for a jeep fan theyre a good bet. i didnt know they were seven seats until i went to look at one !!

problem is in the wrong colour ie black they look more like a hearse :lol:lol

Buy a refurb Tunit II on ebay for £250 (extra 20-25bhp) or get it chipped, probably a bit more say £400.

But think carefully, why shell out more money on some eff-off truck that does 25mpg just to occasionally tow your tin tent?

If your T2 is that under powered maybe there is somthing wrong!

Is there a member close to you that you could compare trucks with?

Mine is parked outside with a trailer (and load) weighing over 2000k right now and i have no low power issues.

also bear in mind that if you are new to large diesel 4x4's or caravan towing it may be your expectations and/or driving style need adjusting - again, find a member near you

My old T2 was remapped, and had no issues with power loss, in fact it had bags of it. The only issue I had with our caravan, is that it was getting shoved around, so in the end have sold up and am looking at patrols - I must say, though - I have had a quite look at the cherokees on LPG and they seem to be doing well on mileage, just got to work out the 'real' running cost.

hAD A VOLVO 940SE ESTATE. got it converted to lpg (apart from the fitters blowing my turbo up and them paying for a new one) it was very good BUT if you dont run on petrol often enough the injectors seize up. so watch lpg!! roy:clap

I assume you mean a genuine Hitachi part because theres no such thing as a Nissan MAF......the Bosch and Hitachi units were the only OEM. If it says Nissan on it and nowt else I'd suggest its dodgy.

And in case anyone hasn't mentioned it already (I only got this far down the thread LOL) you can fit a Tunit II box that would give you abt 20-25bhp extra - they go on eBay for about £250 s/h or refurbed from Tunit.
