Hello all, I really want draw on the vast amount of experience that is on this forum for this one, while I am doing rad cross member and nsf body mount it seems daft not to do a hidden winch tray at the same time, trouble is all I know about winches is synthetic rope sounds good and WARN is flippin expensive

What winches do you guys have?,what would you recommend?, is 13000lb essential?, will batman and robin escape the jokers trap????

Any and all info, advice and recommendations are very appreciated and welcomed, Thanks, Mark :D:thumb2

I have a WinchMax 13000Lb on the front and a 9000Lb on the rear, (forget name) but mounts are the same for both as will be Warn, often the front winch is used with two blocks = 39000Lb pull if the rope is on the drum less on subsequent layers, so with that in mind make sure your tray is well mounted especially if one of your blocks is attached to the tray cos you cannot get lower due to mud etc onto the pig tail, (I have a cable on the front recovery point that is terminated well high) so block goes onto that when possible, 13000 is about as high as you want to go bearing in mind battery current draw and make up from a separate winch alternator, Rick

Best to buy a ready made winch tray as it has all the holes for winch and up stand at front for fair-lead/rollers (rollers not to be used with synthetic). just fit it to your chassis, I welded mine but for a road going motor you may wish to make some brackets and bolt it, Rick

Hmmm good idea, I didn't really want to buy a winch just yet due to funds but I can afford a tray, main reason for buying winch sooner was so I could make sure it fitted, but fitting a tray should work then some fine tuning when I buy a winch, thanks Rick :thumb2

I spool mine off the drum every couple of months and keep it lubed up with a maintenance spray like gt80.
I also whip the gearbox cover off and check and grease it at least once a year.
It is showing signs of aging but a fresh coat of paint in the warmer weather will sort that.

Glad you've started this thread Doug!!! I'm working on my winch as we speak!!!!

I've just been given a 9000lb Winch that I believe to be a Winchmax or so I'm told but I can't find any labels or plates on it anywhere apart from the lid on the solenoid :nenau

It came off a Terrano luckily and came with the bumper re-enforcer that had been modified already to take the winch tray that has come with it too, it's an awful job though and I don't know how much the current one would protrude from the vehicle as I didn't see it before it was removed.

I've been working on it this evening as I brought it faulty but it turns out that one of the earth leads in the solenoid had been rubbing on the lid and frayed, I've re-secured it and it's working with both wireless remotes. I tried the wired remote but this would only pull in, I opened the controller up and it appears one of the spades had fell off, so all remotes working :naughty

I'm now going to open it up and service it all and then get to sanding it down as I'm going to paint it but not sure what colour yet :nenau ,it won't really matter as I too hope to have the winch hidden away.

The whole reason I switched my Mk4 front bumper for a Mk3 one was so I could fit my winch exactly like BonesXU1 did on his red commercial!!!!

Here's my work from this evening

Holy crap Zac, buy a bare chassis and put all your parts on it and I bet you'll nearly have a complete Terry :lol

Thats great though, an interesting project, and you gotta love loose wires sometimes eh :D

Damn straight matey!!! Got me a cheap cheap winch there that I don't care less if it breaks, I'll brand it my "makemistakeswith" winch :lol

Looks ideal for my needs, one thing I was thinking of is how do winches hold up corrosion and ingress wise after a few years?

Depends on what you do, mine has had new seals after less than a year, but I am forced on many times to winch with the winch under water, (but not water more Slindon mud soup very abrasive) when I contacted "Winchmax " he offered a set of seals free as less than a year old I said no I will have two sets and pay for them as I know what Slindon mud does, cheap as chips anyway, Rick

Cheers Zac, saved me searching for them :thumb2, he did a proper job!

I hope I can find someone that will help me do the same.

He's not been on here for a while otherwise I'd offer him good money to do the same for me :( I'd make a holiday of it in the Isle of Man with the Caravan :lol

I won't be using a winch like you do on your off roader, the concern I have is it not working when I need it due to british road grime, but it seems like a bit of simple maintenance and maybe a cover will be enough to keep one in good condition!!

That would come together quite nicely :lol
