Now about this ere oil filter, any wrench advise - would really like to know if any can get the darn thing off without removing the wheel as I'm fairly sure when the inner wing flaps come off, half the inner wing might just try and come with it :doh

I assume from the manual, I should have a wheel brace with a hole in it for the jack - where 'should' that be in case it's hiding?

I use a strap wrench, but once even this was a pain, so I just put on a rubber glove, and it came undone really easily.

The trick is to make sure everything is warm, not hot as you don't want hot oil every where.

Re inner wing flaps, only held in with plastic grommits, so easy enough to remove.
Then you can really see what you are doing.

Wheel brace was originally in a bag under the offside rear passenger side, just lift the rear seat. Failing that, someone may have placed it in the jack compartment with the jack.

Plenty of cars being scrapped so a spare one won't be that difficult to get.

TIP.
3/4 fill the new filter with engine oil, saves starting up waiting for the filter to fill before you get lubricated...

My mate had lent me a strap on :naughty that was a long fabric strap and a bit that you attach a socket wrench onto, trouble was no matter how I got the strap around the filter, I couldn't get an angle to get the wrench plus extender in. Did you use one that had an integral handle?

I used one with a plastic handle where you thread the rubber strap through.

Also used to unscrew jar lids.

Some have used huge curved pliers to grip around the filter, some have used the metal band type with a knob in the centre.

My original filter wrench was the 1/2" drive strap type, useless on these.

This is the most difficult filter I have ever changed.

It can be done from the top, but I stand on an 18" high box so I can reach down.

It is possible to lift the filter out from the top with out spilling any oil...
But mostly it slips and everything gets covered so remove the lower plastic guard from underneath, and place plenty of card board, old trays to collect the spill.

When you tighten the filter, it is also a pig to get tight as well, so check it for leaks later.

Good luck. :doh

I smear some fresh oil on the rubber seal and then hand tighten it, I've never had problems with leaks and it used to undo by hand the next time I did an oil change. They can be a pig to get off, get a mate who has strong arms and book your self into the gym for next time:augie

The only way I could get the darn oil filter off was to hammer a screw driver through it :augie near the top and wrech it round a little, do the same again and gain a little more and then loose enough to turn by hand ( becarefull of sharp burred holes on the other side of the filter where the screw driver came out and make sure you don't pierce it nera the middle or it will rip.:doh - this is messy and a last resourt - do not do this on your expensive block drive

To tighten a new one, 3/4 fill with new oil and smear oil on the o ring - take a piece of sand paper or wet and dry in your hand and use it to get a grip :thumbs
