Just getting into this club and starting to get to grips with my lwb terrano 3.0 litre turbo diesel 2003 model.Having read a lot about the importance of using the correct oil in the rear diff thought I would treat the beast by changing it for correct lsd 80w-90 and improve handling at the same time.
Duly undid both sump plugs and let smelly sticky stuff flow all over hands arm driveway and eventualy, container placed to catch it!
Imagine my confusion when I came to refill with 2.8 litres of amber nectar as stated in my manual when I found I could only get 1.3 litres back in before it started pouring out the level plug! cleverly, I measured the "treacle" I had removed into container and was suprised to find that too was about 1.3 litres.
So..... now very confused and suspisious that my rear diff. usn't what it seems.
I would expect to find the H233B (LSD)diff but given the low oil content would suspect its the R180A diff with 1.3 litres capacity. However I thought that this was only fitted on the front?
It would appear that whatever diff it is, is LSD, as I have jacked up the rear wheels and rotated one side whilst watching the other side. Both wheels rotated in the same direction which from other posts Ive read, indicates LSD.
sorry to be so "long winded" but am keen to know what I'm really messing with. Thanks in advance

Is it a C200 rear diff?

Have been looking on some aussie forums and they say that post 2002 zd30 3.0 litre terrano's used c200 rear diffs same as the navara's anyone know for sure?

I had exactly the same problem:doh same model and year by sounds of it? spent ages trying to cram in 2.8liters after being assured it will take it!!!! but the guys here soon got me sorted:thumbs

apparently it's a C200 diff which has a removable cover on the back?

Oil capacity (Approx.) L (US pt, lmp pt) 1.3 (2-3/4, 2-1/4)

This is the oil spec Terranosaurus gave me, which is the standard.

Standard differential gear: API GL-5
Viscosity SAE 80W-90*3
Limited-slip differential (LSD) gear:
Use only LSD gear oil API GL-5 Viscosity
SAE 80W-90*3 approved for
NISSAN LSD*4.

if both wheels turn in the same direction it will a lsd, as for the oil capacity i dont know, :nenau:thumb2

Smack on boys thanks for prompt response
yes it has the removable cover on back and takes bang on 1.3 litres or 1.5 with .2 of a litre down arms and on face trying to put it in!

Its not just the 3.0litres some of the later 2.7TDis have them too, not sure when the change over is or even if there is a definite cut off but have seen a number of them with C200s in - its also in the parts catalogue too.

If you were to do a search for C200 on here I'm sure you'd find its been mentioned before.

any way of telling externally?

Well waddya know....LSD has a rear cover held in place by eight bolts.

Thats on a 2002 MkIV 2.7TDi....

Any idea if its worse/better/same as the original one Simon?

Hi what make of rear lsd diff oil would people recommend as there is so many different makes and prices and want to use the right stuff.

H233B is a stronger unit than the C200. One is regarded as medium duty an dthe other light or heavy and medium - can't remember which.

Theres H266B too. Its fitted to some trolls.

Now I'm gonna take a punt here and start an argument LMBO!

What if I said the C200 was better, cos its partway between LSD and lockers?

Reasoning is this; the later C200 (I think the early one was fitted to the original Pathfinder) is apparently a clutch-type LSD, as opposed to the gear-type one on previous Terranos? If thats true then, as I understand it, if one wheel on the gear-type LSD loses traction then all drive goes to the other wheel, whereas with the clutch type, the more drive there is from the wheel thats got traction, the more the LSD locks up because of the action of the clutches....

Comments?

But thats so unlike you

Well you'd be wrong then!!

They both have clutch type diffs. Simples.

But was the bit about the clutch type locking the diff up when theres more drive to one wheel correct?:nenau

Hmm kinda - a clutch LSD will try to resist the two wheels turning at different rates but ultimately will slip. The greater the amount of torque being applied the harder it will lock.

Was going to change my rear diff oil this weekend but no one in the area seems to sell the right oil so will have get some from the web .
Also does anyone know where i can by the square tool to remove rear diff fill and level plugs used to have one with several different sizes but cannot find it anywhere .
