I set off to the shop today and noticed a ''thudey'' type noise cming form the stearing wheel. When I got home I took off the small plastic covers and found a large peice metal rattleing around inside, that looks vaguely like a brake shoe.
What is this?, is it a vital working part? , should I gat it looked at strait away?
Can any one help ?

Same thing fell out from under the steering wheel on my 00 T2 recently also. Slightly like a brake pad of sorts with rubber padding on it. The numbers 960 are stamped on it. Fell down on my lap and onto the floor. Didn't notice any difference in driving afterwards and also had a test done since it fell out and no issues showed up with the steering. Think it may have fell off from around the top of the steering wheel at the back just under the dash as a black plastic cover fell off with it and it looks like a cover is missing at the back of the steering wheel. Looks like some sort of "stop" fitting and not something of vital steering importance as it seems to have been attached by 4 light rubber pins. Thought it was for the steering wheel lock but the steering wheel lock still works ok.
Have the piece here and the cover so will take a photo and post it on here if someone does not know what it is.

nothing to worry about, some nissan anti vibration thing that does not make any difference.

Thanks. I was puzzled as to what it could be. You seem to be right that it makes no difference--at least not stuffed into the glovebox for the last 200 miles or so anyway.
