I didn't have a passport until I got one :D
You should try it, I drove from Cheshire all the way to Germany and back again. 1200 miles in a weekend in an old 4 door Escort with a 1600 crossflow. The only time I was asked for my passport was at the ferry port to get back into the country. The doors aren't as wide open as you might think.
It is worth doing, quite an adventure, nice folk (usually around 60-70 cars) and there is always pretty good trips out organized while there.
When we went to Ireland we had a police escort from the docks all the way through Dublin and out the other side. All traffic was stopped to let us through, we had the tunnel to ourselves, on the motorway all traffic was stopped while we came through. Police motorbike outriders were waving us to go faster and I was already doing 85 (sat nav speed).
All roundabout traffic was stopped and we just sailed straight through. A privilege normally reserved for presidents and visiting dignitaries.
This was rush hour on a Friday
I would say it was probably the coolest experience I have ever had.
