what colour antifreeze do i need to use in the mistral?
thanks

If its got green/blue then unless you want to go to the effort of fully flushing the whole systen stay with that. Red is not compatible with the older blue/green type.

I bought mine from Wickes in the end, 3x 2 litres concentrated.
Managed to get 5 litres in after flushing 5-6 times, and running in between.
So that gives a 50% mix good for -39C I think. And a lire for top-up if ever!!

The original was green, and has been in longer than 3 years:doh, but there was rad weld in there as well, just in case, that was alleged to reduce corrosion anyway.
I haven't put rad weld in this time, waiting for any leaks first, but shouild be ok.

Now I'm worried....what happens when you mix red with blue?

I had red'ish (near flourescent red/orange, the old bottle said ethelyne glycol) in the tank and all I had to top up was blue (ethelyne glycol, not that old)!

I didn't know there was a huge difference between colours.

this is what is said on net
antifreeze shouldn't be mixed. when mixed it would create slush in the system(mud looking type thing)

Yep, I've seen that as well, but there are also site which say 'no, you shouldn't mix', but ethelune glycol is ethelyne glycol, just different companies use their own colouring of their choice, but in any case refer to vehicle manufacturers recommendations.

I just don't want an expensinve job on my hands right now and only added some extra coolant just to be sure :(

I think as long as its the same ingredients ignoring colour it shouldn't matter :thumbs
Mines got blue & fluorescent red in it :thumbs

Yep, that's my logical way of thinking :) Have emptied the dregs of both bottles into a clear class to see any obvious reaction...nothing (well...purpley looking liquid, no gel as such), so fingers crossed until I get round to flushing the cooling system and re-filling.

Cheers :D

Shove some new shiny nails in there to see what happens to iron.

I did this one with the water in the heating system to see if it really worked, you will also need a glass of standard water with a few nails as a control.

Then it's a proper experiment.:thumb2

Just checked the specs for the 3ltr engine, says "Genuine Nissan Anti-freeze Coolant (L2N) or equivelant" whereas the 2.7 specs read "Anti-freeze (Ethelyne Glycol base)"......is this more cause for concern?

I think that mixing colours used to be a big no no, as they didn't mix & went 'gloopy' (a technical term!). A couple of mechanics at different garages have told me that it doesn't matter with modern formulations.
Anybody in the know, with a more technical answer?

last time i went for af i was offered red or blue and the book said blue for the mav so their must be a difference in colour across all af's:nenau

I think it is to do with the inhibitors in the mix as far as I remember blue for engines with cast iron heads and blocks, and red for Ali, I always use red as I know it will suite any engine, Rick

Florescent orange/pink here, just because I like the colour. :p

I was told my old VW Sharan had to have green because it was an ally engine, but I just put the cheapest in it because it used to leak like a sieve. Never did find out where from, and the guy who's got it now hasn't either !
