knackers....was rooting around under my back seats a few days ago as I found some water. Checked the seat belt mounts under the arch, passenger side is fine and solid, no water getting in there, but the drivers side....well, its going, and waters is trickling in through a pin hole or seeping in through the rotten metal i dont know, its a bit soft anyway.

so...MOT is Jan/Feb I think, need to check, but im certain it will fail (but even then its not safe) so I need some welding doing asap, any advice?? Id be tempted to have the sills done as well (not the inner sill, the outer sill) on both sides, so thats sorted as well...

i'll help if needed. May be we could have a joint welding day n do mine too.
Jim

If you do any welding on a car with say a mig welder, do you still need to disconnect the battery, alternator, air bags if fitted?
Anything else, ecu, radio?

just disconnect battery, and alternator to be on the safe side, i've done hours of welding on cars over the years and never had an electrical problem afterwards, make sure you remove all rust/under-seal and carpets etc before welding. :thumbs

Thanks for the advice guys! I think illhave just the offside rear seat belt mounting point to do for the MOT, but i think i might cut back the sill covers and re weld metal onto them for peice of mind...

managed to arrange the loan of a mig from my mate over the next month hopefully, then i just need to source the correct metal, and someone to do the work (paid)!:thumbs

Hi Clivvy I had a similar problem with the right rear seat belt attachment point rusting on my previous '96 T2. I drilled a suitable size hole nearby in 'good' bodywork, re-attached the seat belt mount with a couple of big 'repair' washers, 'glassed over and under-sealed the rot and the car passed the French equivalent of U.K. MOT no probs. You might like to try it - nothing ventured........

get the welder and i will do it clive. you will need to strip every thing back so theres no fires and i can crack on, we do it at jims and ill do his at the same time...

Cheers Captain, its a distinct possibility as the metal around is solid, but, to be safe, ill just have it sorted properly. nice idea though !

Martin, your a legend, thankyou so much mate!! Ill pay of course, i want to, and ill strip back the carpet. what about the seats though....shalli just remove them?? ill remove them ill cut out the arch carpet, i think everything else is metal up to the drivers seat....

ill let you see the sills on the day, see if you think its worth welding, removing the repair job wont take much more than a quick grind and hammer.....

make a nice day this will!!

first we need the rain/wind to stop so it wont be this weekend. but if jims ok his drive is good and its easier to park there.. take out the seat if you think it will help but clive being clive im sure youll find a falt with it:lol:lol:lol

any way dont worry were on it soon

Clivvy, Dont forget to get something to put on after the welding has been done, ie Waxoyl or schutz etc, or it will soon be back to how it is now...

Did the o/s sill abt 2 mnths ago and it looks cracking now, only other advice would be if your doing the sills then back it up onto a ramp so you can see and work more easily,

Good luck

good advice, i have a set of ramps too so ill do just that. Ill buy some waxoyl and time permitting, treat it, before the drive home. then a few days later ill spray up the repaired sills with my Hammeright direct to rust paint, its awesome.

Clivvy, as for the sills its a pity you cant borrow someones compressor as you can get a schutz sprayer, it s a spray type gun that has a wide nozzle and you screw on a can and away you go, ideal for sills and after using a can you can always refill with waxoyl and away you go, Christmas is coming so maybe Santa will bring you one, (all assuming you aint got one already) The cans work out at around 3 quid per can 1 litre capacity readily available from most motor factors. Food for thought if nowt else :thumbs :thumbs :thumbs

Wouldnt be without my compressor, so useful for everthing from spraying to blowing the tyres up and blasting on waxoyl:thumbs:thumbs

Id coat everthing if it were me as water will just run over waxoyl, Black for the sills and clear for the engine bay etc

Well guys no problem with my drive. Larson, what do you think about running motors under my carport? do you think it's too much of a fire rsik or is it Ok?

No problem with prep work me and clive can use the grinder and clean it all up.

Jim

while you have got the carpet up check the floor pan as i had the same problem recently with my seat belt mounts.took out the carpet to find that the floorpan was going where the rear seat rubbers sit.had to scrape away the insulation that is glued to the floor under the carpet.
this turned a small job into the best part of a weekend job:eek:.
