Sorry that was just an EG  There is a grid map showing uk & each area has different letters. I put in the ones near me & get somewhere else :?

The best place to start is the Grid reference of your home:

Map Reading 2

The Grid Reference system

The grid reference system can be used on all ordanance survey maps of Great Britain at all scales. Britain is divided into 100km grid squares, each square being identified by two letters. These letters can be found in the corners of each map in hollow blue letters. Generally, these should always be quoted before the figures in a GR sequence.

Each map is divided into 1km squares by fine blue lines. The lines running vertically and progressively numbered from left to right (in an easterly direction) are known as Eastings and are the first set of figures quoted in a GR. The lines running horizontally and progressively numbered from bottom to top (in a northerly direction) are known as Northings, and are the second set of numbers quoted in a GR. To remember this sequence, say, “Along the corridor and up the stairs”

Four figure GRs

To find a four figure GR (correct to 1km on the ground). First - along the corridor, read the two numbers found on the bottom of the map. Second - up the stairs, read the two numbers on the side of the map. Follow the line up and across, where the lines meet you have the bottom left hand corner of a 1km grid square. Four figure Grs are useful to give a general area or an obvious feature.

Six figure GRs

These are the Grs normally used in map reading and are accurate to 100m on the ground. A deviation of no more than one digit incorrect is the minimum acceptable standard.

To find a six figure GR first separate the six figures into two groups of three. Using the first, two figures in the first group, and the first two figures in the second group, find the four figure GR you now have. Having found the square using the third figure of each group, estimate the approx number of tenths - along the corridor and up the stairs. Where the imaginary lines intersect, you now have a six figure GR.

If you can't understand this, then go to: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ click on the big pink circle, a pop up box appears, type your post code in the search box, a map appears, below this is a grid reference. Use this in a http://www.way-finder.co.uk search of lanes around your home.

Any problems - ask!

Anyone having problems finding routes or lanes, please just ask, if I can't help then I'm sure someone else will be able too.

cant you alter your start point to gain more milage?

Use the map link: http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsite/getamap/ click on the pink dot and type in a destination: EG: Alnwick, gives Grid ref: NU 185135, then go back to wayfarer........................................................................

Many, many thanks for that Caneraman -cheers- That has helped me out
I've just checked Wayfinder & nothing is listed  So i'm going to have to chase someone (GLASS Member) up who has a list of the Alnwick area & add them to wayfinder for others to see

I use multi map, if you bring up the map and type a name place in or just click on the map in the area you are looking for and below the map you will see a grid ref, type this in to the search section on wayfinder and it will search anything in that area.

I typed in Northumberland and it came up with this map.

http://www.multimap.com/map/browse....ch=northumberland&addr3=&scale=1000000&addr1=

I then typed the grid ref in to wayfinder and it comes up with lots of options but not all of them may be useable

I hate computers  I've just done what you said & wayfinder came back with no lanes :?  I'm off to bed to sulk & i'll try again tomorrow
Thanks for your help 8)

Ok

Obviously I am not 100% sure on how you guys are doing this but I will try and break it down further.

Firstly open Multimap.

Then enter your location on the search facility on the left hand side, you can either type in a place or a postcode, this will display the map required.

Below this map there is a Grid Ref such as "Grid ref: NT953003".

Open up wayfinder and log in, then using the "View Lanes" button on the left open up the next page, do not use the "quick find" section.

Halfway down the page you will see a "view lanes by location" section, enter the first two digets "NT" then enter the first three numbers "953" then enter the second numbers "003"

You will need to enter a distance such as "50km" this will the take you to another page showing 5 colums displaying lane data, you can then check out each one indervidualy.

unfortunatly wayfinder will not allow me to use a URL as it comes up with error.

Hope this helps.

Well i've tried all the above & it don't work for me  Even typed in a grid ref for Haydon Bridge start G.R. NY817625 which I got off a member of GLASS & Wayfinder came back with no lanes :? I'm now getting very confused :(

Sweety if you want an online map of a lane on Wayfinder why not click on the links in the top left and top right hand corners, there are 3 different scales and two different size maps available for both start and finish. Or hit the button in the centre "google map of lane" which gives a good overview but doesn't give OS mapping unfortunately.

As for NZ I'm getting 3 pages retu8rned when I check NZ, where are you entering it you should be using "View Lane Data by Grid Square" if you just want to put in NZ. You shouldn't get anything in the lakes as they are NY, unless you're using the wrong search and searching within 50kms of a reference in NZ.

I find the easiest way is to either download an overlay for multimap or if you haven't got multimap download tracj explorer from wayfinder and then you can see better how the various lanes interrelate, then click on lanes and go back to wayfinder for the details.

Now thats even more confusing, I tried track explorer from Wayfinder, way way over my head coundn't understand a thing on it.

Memory maps the same, way over my head, it loads but I havn't the fainest idea how to open it or work it.

Afraid its the paper maps for me.

You must be doing something wrong and when you find out what I bet you kick yourself. I've just put in the Grid ref you gave and come up with 4 pages of routes. The Grid ref I gave for Alnwick brings up 2 pages!!

You'll have to describe in detail what you are doing so we can help

ill stick to tomtom it seems it can send people into middle lake without them even wanting to go anywhere nr it lol!

This is how i'm prob making a mess of it  I go into view lanes, then go to the top section view lanes by location, then enter in 50KM NU 185 132& then press search  Then it comes back with: There Are No Lanes Recorded That Match Your Search :?
Help what am I doing wrong

I get 2 pages of results for that search? W"hat browser are you using? Try putting 1850 and 1320 instead

I'm not very good with computer trems  but I think it's google. I check it out with my younger brother as he's got a degree in computing & net working. Mind you the last time I seen him open the bonnet of his car his face looked just like -> 8O So I showed him what was what under the bonnet  He'll let me know but i'm sure it's google now thinking about it

It's not - google is a search engine. If you don't know what it is it will be Microsoft Internet Explorer, if your computer is reasonably recent it will be version 6 or 7 (an aside - does vista ship with a new version? 8?), just wondered if you might be running something obscure as I know not all browsers are supported by Wayfinder, I use Firefox and that is not sure about others.

But if you're having trouble with that as I said download Trackexplorer.

Once its downloaded and installed, run Trackexplorer you then need to click on the rough area you want to see lanes in then click on Wayfinder, in the drop down menu click on "Down load Grid Sguare NU" in your case and once its done the lanes will appear on the map. Click on a lane then click on the question mark button in the sidebar to view the details in wayfinder.
