I have noticed the underneath of my terrano is quite rusty. I would like to get it wax oiled and also replace the sump guard. Can anyone recommend a place that can do this in the West Midlands? I don't have access to a ramp otherwise I would have a go myself.

Have you actually tried sliding under there, you don't need much of a lift to crawl under and through.

What ever you do, think safety, can it slip, or crush any supports, can the ground give way. Use axle stands where appropriate. etc
Use eye protection, and if using waxoyl a suitable hat.. or I guess a shower cap, will do lol....

Get a big tarp to work on, or use a black rubber cement mortar mixing tray, to catch the muck, and excess wayoyl, and it doesn't blow around like newspaper. Wickes sell them.
Good for replanting plants too, or even mixing mortar lol.:thumb2

Mine's not too bad underneath but am also interested in a waxoil. Local garage in Gloucester reckoned about £80. My questions are: should you only do it when the chassis is dry (so you don't trap moisture) and should you steam clean it first? Obviously a period between the two would be required if the answer to both is yes.

Difficult to put a fair price on & I don't know much about price & coverage of waxoyl as I used Dinitrol but I assume it is similar. I spent more than that on the product.
What I am trying to say is if blogs garage down the road can do it cheaper it may be because they just apply it much thinner.

I was chatting to my mate yesterday about the Dynax that I used for under mine. We both agreed it smelled like used engine oil with a Waxoyl aroma.

He then said the garage that does his MOT's uses an old engine oil & waxoyl mix for any customers that require undersealing doing.

I expect it would work well & would be much cheaper

Tbh I can't see it being that good of a job for £80.
Many years ago when I worked for a commercial re finisher we had a contract doing the old British gas transit vans.
Full underside steam clean, prep and underseal was around the £200 mark.
This was 20 years ago.
I would do your own prep work and let them do the undersealing then at least you know they are not just covering everything up to hide it.

Hmmm. Thanks for the advice. IIRC, they say the waxoil was about £25 and the rest was labour. Was quite a while ago that I asked though so maybe I haven't remembered the price correctly.

I painted my Landrover Series IIA chassis with used engine oil once. Did a good job but not a job I enjoyed. Did it at a local garage on their ramps which made a lot of difference. I guess if I had proper garage ramps I would do it again myself. We'll see.

I though that land rovers had the feature of coating the underside with oil as standard, the other areas you had to concentrate on, was the rear chassis member, and the outriggers. :lol:lol

He he. She wasn't too bad. I remember the first time I changed the oil after I bought her. The oil from the filter had the consistency of water logged compost.

Where abouts in the west midlands are you mate? I have a pressure lance, if you have somewhere I can do it with access to mains for a wire brush on a drill and a big flood lamp I'll do it for you for a good price :thumb2 I did mine on the floor with a set of drive on ramps then switched ends when I'd done the other

I've Waxoyled my Terrano and you really can see the difference under there when you look compared to one that hasn't been done
