Water Pump Replacement Advise

Well it looks as if i've been hit with the T2 water pump curse :evil: :evil: :evil: I've just had a quick look at it & there seams to be a gasket fitted between the pump & block :roll: do you get this with the new pump or can you clean the old one up & reuse it ? Do you fit the new pump dry or use a sealer & if so can anyone recomend eg blue hilimar ? My anti freeze is nice & strong at the min so am a bit unsure wether to add 1 or 2 litres of anti freeze when I top it back up :roll: Last queastion you'll be pleased to hear do you have to bleed the coolant system a part from putting the heater onto the screen & onto hot with the blower going ?
After looking at the down load i've noticed mine is quiet different in that the alternator adjustment is like a mini's & I don't have any G/box oil pipes but I think thats because mines a mannule.

Sorry to bump this guys it's just that hopefully i'll be able to get the parts tomorrow & hopefully get it done inbetween the rain showers as i've got to keep the truck on the road for the next few weeks due to caring for family members.

im sure there gonna give u new gasket bitove instant gasket will keep it in place whilst you fiddle about with pump!
the autos only have the pipes but they dont carry water just atf so no wories there

check utthe downloads i am sure rossco put it in there but you do not need to remove radiator it can be done in place
when i had mine done they used new gasket supplied and a gasket sealer as well

When we was trying to fix a Maverick once we used gasket sealer in a tube.

I know it was a petrol but it was still a water pump.

Well getting my new pump tomorrow at the lovely price of £84 :roll: going to replace the belts at the same time to be on the safe side & keep one of the old belts in the boot as a get me home belt :lol: All I got to do now is work out how much anti freeze i'll need as mine is quiet strong :roll:

I see Halfrauds do a redimixed anti freeze in 5 ltrs,might be a bit easier sweety.i used it in the inlaws car.. :lol:

Silly queastion :roll: whats the best way to get the fan off the pump :?: & whays the best way to bleed to coolant system on the TDI :?:
Hopefully may get it done tomorrow if this rain & wind drops :roll:

Hi sweety the fan is bolted onto the water pump and can be undone still on the pump in the engine bay after you have taken the radiator out, you'll need about a 12mm socket.
Check your fan blades for cracks at the base as they are prone to this, and if you have cracks replace the fan.

To bleed the system or radiator is to remove the bottom hose and let the radiator drain.

Your coolant mixing % is usually on the bottle of the anti freeze so follow manufactures recommendations when re filling the radiator.

No probs Thor i've got a very nice big hammer & a new cutting disc in my grinder :lol: :lol: :lol:

I have'nt done it yet :lol: :lol: went out to do it & as the temp outside was 2'c & my hands were turning blue so i've left it until tomorrow as it's surposed to be a warmer day :roll:

Well I managed at last to get the pump done :smile: but not sure if now I have a prob :? on the road I can hear the fan all the time, it's not roaring like when you 1st start up but is whirling which my old pump did'nt do as far as I can remember :roll: I'm not sure if it could be just the new belts settling in or if i've put the fan on back to front but i'm sure it's on the right way eg the back part covers the viscus coupling. Also the top hose is getting nice & hot but the bottom hose is cold but i'm sure it was like that with old pump on.

Any advise will be most welcome :smile:

Glad you have the pump on ok Sweety, as for your previous question, but you probably already know having it all up and running, you do not need to bleed the cooling system just fill up at the rad and add some to the expansion tank to the level, run up to temperature and recheck levels avoiding removing the rad cap when hot.

The radiator sounds ok and doing its job hot at the top and colder at the bottom.

The fan noise you have is a little strange; I would do as you are going to do check the belts are not slipping and run it for a few days, keeping an eye on the temperature.

I have set the belts so they have 1/2" movement on the longest part of the belts but am thinking of slackening them off just a bit to see if that helps with the noise as my old belts had a bit more than 1/2" play on them. As for the viscous coupling it's about the same stiffness as my old one to turn well the resistance is the same but I never had a prob with overheating with old pump. Will run it for a week to see if things get better if not I will see if I can get a replacement pump under warranty :roll:

I got my pump from my local parts place just up the road :smile: Milners off road do them for £80 plus p&p if thats any help. On the plus side mine was easier to do than the one in the down loads as I did'nt have to remove the skid plate & the alternator I just had to slaken the bottom bolts & the top slider bolt (mines like a mini's alt)
