Water leak...

I've recently changed the water pump, as I thought it was leaking. The problem is still there, a small weep coming from ,(it looks like), somewhere just above the water pump.

Any ideas ?

It only happens for a couple of minutes when starting from cold, and then stops.

I had a slight weep from around that area after changing my pump:dohI think the coolant was some how seeping along one of the studs that hold the water pump in place but I'm not a 100% sure, in the end I put some rad weld in the system & all has been good for the last 6 month plus:augie

hi lee, try putting a bottle of K-SEAL in system it will stop the leak and any others that might accure.

When i fitted the pump, I put a smear of Loctite 5699 water pump gasket sealant each side of the paper gasket. I was toying with the idea of taking the pump off again, cleaning up both faces, and refitting the pump with a proper bead of sealant without the paper gasket, just so as I know it's definately not that joint weeping.

I agree with Lee, sort out the face to face leak
I would use a "radweld" style fix as a last resort.
Their are loads of quality gasket sealant out there, loctite is one of the best.

While the pump is off again, where should I look for other possible culprits ? The thermostat housing is above the pump area, would it be worth taking this off aswell ?

Before taking the pump back off:
Did you torque the water pump bolts correctly?
Re-check the water pump bolts to see if they are tight (torqued)
Check the hose connections on the thermostat housing.
Check heater hose connection on the thermostat housing.
See if the thermostat housing it self is leaking at the gasket.

If you do take the pump back off get yourself another gasket, same with the thermostat housing.

Putting leak blockers in the water is only treating the symptom not the cause.

Hi Lee,

Did you get the leak sorted in the end, I seem to have developed a similar one.

I replaced the thermostat and now the engine is getting up to temperature properly but the increased temperature/pressure seems to have sprung a leak. Like yours it is from somewhere around the water pump, think I'll end up replacing it.
