Water leak into passenger footwell

Hi Guys,

I've got a 1998 Mav 2.4i which has a water leak into passenger footwell.The leak seems to be coming from the plastic side ventilator duct wher it joins the heater unit. If i reach up inside at the rear of the glove compartment I can feel whatseems to be a foam sealaround the plastic casing - is this likely to have perished and if so how easy is it to replace? I've checked the sunroof drains and everything else I can but no idea what to check next. Any help appreciated.

Geordie think theres a panel in the bulkhead as well thats problematic but its common as muck so someone who's fixed it will be along shortly :thumb2

I have posted on this before, mine was the same, if it is rain water and not coolant, then it is from a plate under the plastic cover where the windscreen wipers come out.

Remove wiper arms, remove plastic trim, several plastic rivits.

The problem is the bottom right screw on the plate on the passenger side,
It's the only screw that when it drips, rain water will go inside the vehicle.
Remove the plate and re seal the plate and the screw and it should be ok.

Simple if you can get the wipers arms off.

appreciate said checked sunroof drains.


did that include taking front flaps off to make sure no muck
behind there as its possible for a build up there and even if you
prod the the drain hole it will still be full higher up.

then if enough water comes down either the sunroof drain
or down bulkhead it will wash over in to foot well, mine was
passenger too. will need trim off that is surrounding bonnet
release.

saying this cos i took my wipers off to get at air box, and it was
a sod, for nothing, the area was dry.

reckon we're near can give a hand, or a neb if you like.

Ok as per an earlier thread, I have seen the sun roof drains, they drain into the sill further behind the mud flaps, this is a different section to the gap behind the mud flaps, but the drain for the front sill can get blocked from the under side, on the bottom of the sill.
To see the drains, remove the plastic kick plate on top of the sill, there are 4 plastic screws, remove the trim, shine a bright light in through one of the holes, and in the right position, you can see the black rubber tube.

You may also see other things in there.... like mud or rust...
Mine looked as new.

open passenger door, look in bottom of wing, clean out inch of mud, problem goes away.

Had same problem, tried everything - eventually someone who new better than me took off headlining and refitted the detached sun roof drain pipe!

Result - dry footwell!

My old one used to pour in when it rained heavy!

Mine was caused by a drain pipe from the AC which had blocked.

another possiblilty
im not very familiar with the terrano as yet, but on my volvo it is a common issue with a small rubber o ring leaking which connects the in and out pipe to the heater matrix.
one way to help find the problem is use some white paper to soak the water up and see what colour it is. if its coolant, then your heater matrix is leaking somewhere. good luck with the search and dont forget to post up your findings

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the posts.

I removed the wiper arms, the the plastic scuttle beneath the wipers then the plastic plate on the bulkhead and screws. Resealed everything, replaced all the bits then sealed the rubber strip at the bottom of the windscree. Used the Mav all last week in the snow and so far so good. If I get any more leaks then I guess it's coming from somewhere else so it will be back to the drawing board. Will clear out behind the mud flaps as soon as the waether improves - probably next spring!!
