Hi Guys,

so I had a look at my fuel filter just now, to try and get soemthing out of the drain pipe-engine check light is random. As said in a previous post, when I tried this last week, all I got was a gurgle, so this time I opened the lower tap, then also opened the upper tap, and pumped the primer, did get diesel out the top, not sure if it actually ejected any water out the hose. Gave the inside a wash and mop up. I then cleaned my MAF a bit while I wait for a new one to arrive. Question is this, would water in the fuel filter cause a stall? Or any form of poor running? All I get is random revving of the engine, and not very often it stalls, like it did today, stood at lights then bump, stall. Started up fine. I was wondering if water in the fuel could cause this, or a combination of dirty maf?

are you sure its the light for water in fuel and not engine management ?

cos your not getting water from filter

i doubt it would cause stall same for the maf, poeple often think maf... when in truth how often is the problem actually the maf?

not often at all

any smoke ? or other symptoms ?

id look at fuel lines or earth straps for the stall

If you have a lot of water in system then you will have problems, such as holding back, spluttering, starting problems, but you will get the same symptoms from a partly blocked fuel filter.

Change the fuel filter as this can get blocked, as the interior cleaning element uses a very fine element to trap small particulars.

wel...its the "check" light that pops on, the manual says that could be water in the fuel filter..? it is random, sometimes it doesnt come on for days...

All fuel lines etc that I have check LOOk ok, i.e. no splits or leaks or anything. Smoke wise, nothing really, bit on startup, cant see any when I floor it and non when at idle, even when cold. NO other symptoms that come to mind except what listed, so thats random "check" light, and engine revs randomly.

Any amount of water getting in to the injection pump is bad news; water will not compress and will cause irreversible damage to the pump such as pitting of the rotor.

Water being heavier than diesel will always fall to the bottom of the filter trap, so if you suspect you have water in the trap and find you can not drain it, removing the filter and drain from the bottom, by removing the water float switch assembly, if you drain in to a glass jar you will see any evidence of water after leaving it stand for a wile.

You probably have something electrically wrong and should read the error codes stored in the ECU, look in the downloads for the guide on how to do it.

Thanks Jeremy, I will do this and let you all know...

guys, where IS the downloads section, I cant seem to find it now!

no worries, I found it!

incidently th emav was a pain on the way home. Came up to lights at busy junction, an di just KNEw it was gonan stall, and it did!! swine wouldnt start untill JUST before the lights changed. I happended to be yards away from Andrew Page, so dropped in there for a fuel filter. Now the mav is parked up unitl I fix it, will use my Mazda for now.

SO, I plan to replace the positive and negative wires or connections, fuel filter and see how that goes. I really need to sort the running out, its just weird how it does what it does, but its getting worse, as in its started actually stalling now, will pull the codes and let you know, hopefully you will have some more ideas...!!!
