So, whilst looking for the source of a noise, i noticed that when revving the engine (in neutral - no actual load) - the waste gate actuator moves about 5mm.
This only happens when quickly flooring the accelerator from idle and as soon as the revs rise to ~3.5K then letting off again - so just pumping the accelerator sort of thing.
I've searched posts and know its supposed to limit the boost but its not clear if simply revving the engine would cause enough boost when the only load is that of the engine itself.
Is the wastegate supposed to open in this scenario?
