So, whilst looking for the source of a noise, i noticed that when revving the engine (in neutral - no actual load) - the waste gate actuator moves about 5mm.

This only happens when quickly flooring the accelerator from idle and as soon as the revs rise to ~3.5K then letting off again - so just pumping the accelerator sort of thing.

I've searched posts and know its supposed to limit the boost but its not clear if simply revving the engine would cause enough boost when the only load is that of the engine itself.

Is the wastegate supposed to open in this scenario?

No definitely not, so some thing is wrong, sounds like the spring may have failed, I can only just move the rod off the stop with both hands and cannot hold it there, how does that compare to yours, Rick

Just tried and its a bit difficult to grip, but if use a screwdriver to push the actual rod (using the adjusting nut as the screwdriver stop) - i can push the rod all the way in and hold it. Its not easy and there does seem to be a reasonable amount of resistance.

Just thinking - could i stick a compressor line on the vacuum/pressure hose (i guess its positive pressure) - just at say 1.5 or 2Bar and see if that moves it - or indeed increase and decrease air pressure and see what point it moves.

The IC is off at the moment so can't start the engine.

yes you can it should open at around 12 psi for a factory nissan turbo diesel engine.

Found it was starting to open at about 10psi so i've placed a second spring on the lever to help.

Now starts to open at about 12~13psi so i'll give that a go (when the IC has dried out from its clean) and see what its like (being very careful).

Does this sound better than adjusting the rod?

(I'll attach a pic when photobucket stops playing up).

Sounds as if the actuator spring has become weak:rolleyes: could never budge the one on the old T2 but not tried this one:augie
Have you got a link for the silicon pipe you've used & did you do both sides of the IC & was the pipe a good fit ?

The turbo to IC hose was from the following;

Its the 57mm ID hump hose (cut down equally each side to the right length). The fit was OK, i would have liked it a bit tighter (possibly could have got the 54mm one from merlin below as i was able to stretch the 57mm hump hose a bit).

The other side is more problematic as its a 67mm ID and i couldn't seem to find a straight hump hoses of that diameter. I've resorted to getting a straight hose from a different place (no hump - shouldn't make a difference as both bits are bolted to the engine so minimum movement). Only ordered this one this morning so not fitted yet.

I've gone for the 65mm one assuming i can stretch it a bit.

Cheers:thumbs I managed to stretch one ok on my mates motor but had to used a bet of WD40 to help it slide on.
