Why do they use plastic? :nenau
Cheaper than a machine casting I guess.

Are there metal inserts in the fixing holes to prevent damage caused by over-tightening?

Plastic is used for rocker box covers too, some inlet manifolds, oil filter housings etc etc...

mines just cracked too, thankfully I had my old aluminium one from the Maverick. Yes, the bolt holes do have metal inserts BUT, it would appear this doesn't stop a hairline crack from appearing. I suspect its down to the grade of plastic, temperatures and of course, over tightening....!

I could swear that mines metal when I replaced my stat

The earlier ones were aluminium. :thumb2

It seems that they decided to use plastic on some later ones.:augie

Probably at the same time they saved 50p by not fitting the grease nipples on the front prop shaft, and replaced the auto hubs with fixed hubs.:doh:doh
