hi guys,

another vibration post, hope you can help?

So, ill try describe this as best as I can. Driving along, third gear, low speed say 20-30mph, I have a vibration. I can feel it in the pedals, but it fills the cabin and its like a thrumming vibration type noise, very odd. Mostly goes away the faster I drive...

what could this be??

first thing to determine is it road speed related or engine speed? Rick

not sure Rick, I used to feel that it was the gearbox, though maybe I need to do some more diagnostics on the road. I will attempt to replicate the vibration then press the clutch in and see if it continues, take out of gear see if it continues and so on...:thumbs

Sods law isn't it Clivvy, I went across to Clivvys place this afternoon. We went out for a run round and nothing, not a sausage. Let Clivvy have a run round in mine to compare the two trucks two.

At least we had a catch up Clivvy:thumbs

Rick is bang on the money as usual

How does it behave when travelling at the same speed in neutral?

I'm going to put my neck on the line here though and say that due to it coming and going like that, it stands a chance that it's going to be rear prop UJ's ;)

I'll check that tomorrow Banshee. I'm not familiar with the ujs, where is the rear prop uj??

I am sure mine is engine speed related
U/J's at end of prop shafts

What ever you do Clivvy, if you disconnect the rear prop from the rear diff you'll lose your diff oil.

Ah ok, sorry for being a bit thick!!

I'll have a good inspection tomorrow, are there any tell tale symptoms I can look for such as play or worn rubber or something?

Erm not the diff oil Jim but some of the transfer box oil, but Clivvy can remove the 4 bolts connecting prop to diff and let it hang down, now he can flex the uj's and feel for roughness or play, just do not pull the prop out of the gearbox end or you will lose oil, Rick

I was advised to jack the rear of the car up when I did it and it worked a treat :)

How odd you say this Rick. Back in summer when I had a vibration issue Bigbunny was helping me. He undid the bolts between the rear diff and propshaft, pulled the propshaft away and oil started to dribble out so he pushed the propshaft back and replaced the bolts.

So what could have caused that? Is there some kind of oil seal leaking on mine?

oil is seeping between the pinion shaft and the flange and built up in the void, if you had wiped it with a rag you would have seen no more oil, unusual for this to happen though so I would be having it off again and check the large pinion nut if it is loose it will need tightening, it is a big nut and done up mega tight and to do it the flange must be fixed with a long bar so no strain is placed on the crown wheel and pinion, Rick

It's mechanical facts like this that are crucial :clap

rear diff oil I did a few months ago (vibration has always been present).

front diff however I have never done, and I haven't done the transmission oil either.
