Hi all
I've got a 2004/54 2.7SE with 57k miles and fsh.
Unless the revs are up I get a noise that transmits through the whole car which sounds like the exhaust hitting somewhere but have checked and it has plenty of clearance??
Any ideas appreciated :thumbs

is it just the exhaust note?

I also have same year 4x4 and I must say at the right revs they are very noisy indeed, feel like my ears are going to bleed sometimes, also noticed there is no CAT on my exhaust too. Might be worth checking yours.

Can you describe the noise a little more, eg, metalic clunk or rubbing, or just the exhaust dull tone :nenau

Also welcome to the forum, people on here have a lot of knowledge and experience so be patient and you will get your answer :thumb2

Get under the car and take a look around for anything obvious something dangling down etc.

Failing that, try and rattle your propshaft by hand, it could be your UJ's that have gone and that will be evident when you're playing with it, replacment is quite cheap, I personally foundit a bit*h of a job first time round but I'd be confident doing it again;

Bang your springs with a rubber headed mallet and see if they rattle, you might have a spring that's sat funny or snapped in its cup

Do you have side steps? These can also rattle

as said the side steps can rattle, check the flexi on the exhaust as this can come loose and make a right rumble, the diesels dont have cats on them also check the boxes on the exhaust they like to rot on the top

Also, if you have one, check your sunroof. There are two M4 screws, accessable through the tilted sunroof, which come loose causing a rattle at certain revs. There's a write-up on where they are on here, done by 96terrano.

it's a Nissan :augie :thumb2

I rattle more than my Mav these days, lots of clunks and clicks, but the Mav is fine.:lol:lol

I once had a reverberation rattle at a certain rev, it sounded like a machine gun, it was the U bolt on the exhaust bracket that is clamped to the side of the gearbox, the nuts on the U bolt loosen, best to run a second M8 nut on each one to act as a lock nut, problem solved.:thumb2

Also the metal bracket that attaches to the gear box can also crack, so a blob of weld cures that.

Another rattle, can be the plastic engine under shield, it is attached using M6 bolts with penny washers, which can be loose.:thumb2

Prop shaft worth investigating, front as well as rear, as later models have fixed hubs on the front.

Thanks for the replies. The prop sounds like first port of call this weekend. Have already checked suspension and exhaust and they are fine. Will let you know the outcome.

Do not forget to check the front one as well, cos on yours it is turning all the time due to fixed hubs and no greasers on the prop, Rick

Sorry Rustic just read your post and you already said that:doh ,Rick

But would noise come from the front prop shaft as it's not under load in normal driving conditions, my terrano rattles a lot if the engine is under load and the revs are not high enough. Also I did the rear ujs but made no difference.

found the culprit at last!!!
checked everything including props etc. and it turned out to be the 2 nuts that hold the rear door handle to the door had come loose.
cant believe it was something so trivial causing such a racket but am a very happy owner now my car is vibration free :thumbs

Are these under the door card?

sorry just seen this message, yes the bolts are under the door card.
since resolving the problem I noticed there was still a slight rattle and found that when the oil was last changed one of the 6mm bolts that holds the sump guard up had been sheered and the sump guard was vibrating on the crossmember.
all sorted now
