I recently started to notice a subtle but obvious vibration/resonance at around 50 to 60 MPH.

In short front prop UJ, at transfer box end was messed up:
A pile of rust was the bearing on one of the journals, this was from a 2002 MKIV so sealed for life with no grease nipples! Notice there are a couple of needle rollers that are broken in two...
For comparison, the shiny needle roller on the left is a good one taken from one of the journals that was still good.

bluddie hell mate  ..... a lesson to us all to check perhaps ...... all ok now ?

this is what happens when they do not give you a grease nipple any more, Rick

All sorted now thanks.
Yes Rick, you are absolutely correct, save a few pence on a grease nipple and we pay later!
Modern manufacturing eh..........
But I have replaced it with a rebuilt 2.7 MK? prop with said nipples:thumbs

it is four bolts at each end of the prop, easy, as for pressing the UJ out a large vice will suffice, and a set of circlip pliers, Rick

Hmmm worth a look then. :thumb2

on some that I have seen the IJ has been drilled and threaded and a blank plug put in just unscrew it and fit a nipple then you can grease it even if the old grease has started to harden up, new grease will often sort it out, Rick

Probably worth mentioning that had it not been for "fixed" hubs I would not have noticed the problem nearly so early.
With auto-hubs the front prop does not do much day by day until pressed into service when 4WD is required.

As Rick says, it's just a (15MM IIRC) spanner job, a large vice is a bonus for both disassembly & re-assembly.

I picked up a 2.7 prop from my local scrappy and rebuilt it prior to swapping it out.

so was this noise only in 4WD then Ray?

No, 2WD. But no doubt it would have been apparent in 4WD too, although the loading on the UJ may have altered the resonant speed at which it occured.
BTW the breaker I got the new prop from had a number of Terranos in various states, spotted a Hitachi MAF sensor on one of them!

Tks, might explain a small symptom of mine :thumb2

If you suspect the front prop UJ's, then undo 8 bolts and drop the prop Then test drive it....
BTW while it is off check the splined/sliding shaft for any axial movement too, that can cause oddity's too.

hi ray,
been off air recently, but have sold the old maverick and bought a 2005 ex MOD police terrano with 80k warranted on it.
reason for replying to this thread is it has a vibration/resonace at about 55mph, gets worse up 602ish then is fine, did you behave in a similar way? i was thinking bent propshaft or axle, but would like to think new short shaft would cure, if you have chance let me know.
new car is loads more powerful than old, i do wonder if the ecu is standard, or my old 2.7 was tired? also ecconomy is above 30, even at high motorway speeds.

off to remove prop shaft.

steve

That's pretty much exactly how mine behaved, would start to kick in at 50 ish then behave normally after 60 or so....
My original front prop potentially had two problems.
Obviously the UJ was shot, but the splined shaft also showed excessive lateral play, this may have been caused by the shot UJ though?

mine did the same 50 /55 vibration 60/65 fine vibration went i only found my out when i jacked the front wheels up and tureed them while watching the prop shaft at the front and noticed it was in a mess

hi both,
have removed front shaft and all is ok, uj's seem fine, i have dissasembled and re-greesed, refitted and fault is same:(
have removed again, checked transfer box and no oil, thanks nissan who have done all the services! last one only 4k ago.
output shaft to front prop when turned seems noisy, i have filled box with correct oil, going back to france in morning, plan is,leave off shaft, and put transfer box in 4x4h, hope oil will remove noise, do you remember how much noise from your box when you spun output?
maybe new transfer box required soon, same as old cars? anyone got a good one for sale?

power is so good, realy chuffed, and got car cheep:)

steve

did you take it for a drive without the front prop fitted?
