Hello 4x4 Nissan people.

After many years owning land rovers, Surfs etc, and a 2 year stint with a Volvo V70, I think I need a Terrano....... :)

I've never had a Nissan, although I think the old Patrols look very cool !

I work at a garage on the front desk, and no-one in the workshop has a bad word to say about Nissans... whereas normally they abuse me for my car choices :lol

So, the plan is, hopefully, get myself a 3.0 SVE Terrano, manual, mostly because my wife wants heated seats :) and I want the large boot space for camping gear etc, and so I can get my boy to school in the winter up the country lanes

Budget is 3k, plus the value of the volvo as trade in, making 4 to 4.5k in total.

After the grunt of the V70, I reckon the 3.0 will fit the bill, or is the 2.7 really a lot slower / torquey ?

Any opinions or abuse welcome, and I hope to actually contribute at some point when I have my Terrano....

abuse , take the mickey .... who ..... us ? ...... as if :augie

welcome by the way :thumb2

the 3.0 is definitely a superb engine, id get one if I could find/afford one.

BHP and Torque are considerably higher, and the MPG is a smidge higher, so its win-win. Engine is as reliable I believe, and that's saying something as the 2.7 lump is superb.

Still, even with 150bhp don't expect it to be too quick, but the torque will more than make up for the lack of 0-60 (which is about 14 seconds I think) and these 4x4s can pull some weight.

best of luck finding one, be sure to do all the usual checks in the engine bay, drive train, sills, front cross member rear lsd etc and you wont go far wrong.

I have only owned one for a few months.i spent a fair few quid getting it good (that's before any mods)
I looked int othe 3.0 litre and yes its seems to be slightly better on fuel and torque ect.
but I looked into the insurance which was quite a bit more for the extra power I would of got.
and parts seem much more expencive.
and my 2.7 se+ has leather heated seats :D
Ive only looked at one 3.0 engine. but the difference under the bonnet are completely different so much so as the bonnet is a lot more humped to fit it all in.
and 4.5k will get you a lot of terrano. theres no real need to spend that much.
if you buy the later models you will pay a lot more road tax
welcome to the club

cheers guys :)

yup, the insurance is higher than the 2.7, but I'm nearing the 50 mark (18 in the head), so not too bad....

A 2.7 SE+ would fit the bill I suppose, and leave a nice sum left over for all kinds of things :) but all the talk of torque teases me, given the V70 has 163bhp, and pulls like a train. A very big, strong train.....

But, I was happy with the speed (relative) and torque of a 200tdi landrover, despite having to plan an overtake 3 months in advance :D

that is some horses mate.
mines very low as its just the td.
at least my licence is clean:D
My mate/mechanic says I drive to slow and need to give it some shit to clear it out:nenau I like slow n steady unless its got two wheels :sly then I grow horns:D

Get a Terrano as you won't look back, I had a SWB & replaced it with a disco2 what a huge mistake that was:doh:doh:doh Just bought another Terrano:thumbs Don't but put off the late reg ones just make sure it was first regged before march 06 as the price for jumps an extra £200, my 55 plate is £280 a year but a 06 plate is £480:eek:

I'd not get a 3.0

Seen too many with cracked heads now

2.7 runs veg, has bomb proof timing gear, easy to DIY as engine is sooo bloody simple

Just my opinion

Yup the 2.7 lump is pretty much bullet proof. No shot heads after 50k or so like some 4x4's.
Just do your checks b4 you buy(As already said)And rive it hard they love it.

I've not seen any reports of cracked heads on 3.0, however there are only around 2500 on the road, as opposed to 12,000 2.7s. (according to this website)

and another thing - will the 2.7 accelerate in 5th uphill ?

colour wise, blue, green, or that purply reddy maroon is my choice

leather seats

cd changer

under 100k on the clock

Mine pulls very well on hills, depends what hills

My gearing is quite tall tho due to the larger wheels so 5th is very much an overdrive gear now, perfect for low fuel consumption motorway cruising

Where are all these then :confused:

I have read that the earlier 3.0 suffered some problems, but the later engine has been modified.

I have had both and as I've I have said before, I find the 3.0 more refined, better on fuel, pulls better than my old 2.7 did, defo easier to change the oil filter. Pain in the arse on the 2.7.
Timing gear is a chain, if it were a belt, I could understand the concern.

The only problem I have had, is the oil pressure switch, £6, 5 minute job to do.
When you look through here, owners have more problems with the 2.7...loosing power, not starting ....
I never had any of those problems with my 2.7, lucky :nenau.

I had to change the injector bleed off pipes a couple of times though.

Just my experiences and observations.

It's true, we will always see a lot more problems with the 2.7 being queried on here, because there's that many more of them, and they were the first engines in and therefore those engines are now getting older, so you would expect problems to start. I've had the 3.0 for 5 yrs, now on 82k and not a hint of any problems. (Probably just jinxed it), the statistic that always gets quoted on here is the increased time to change a head gasket on the 3.0 but I've never seen anyone on here reporting a head gasket failure on the 3.0.
I'd'have the 3.0 all day long as the price differences are now becoming less drastic, and the improved fuel economy means you don't have to mess about with veg oil ratios and buying your fuel from Costco. Don't forget the 3.0 was in the patrol first which is significantly heavier, pop it in the terrano and surprise surprise you get great performance, economy and the engine is generally given an easy life because its efectively overspecified for the vehicle.

Couldn't agree more:clap

I appear to have started a 2.7 vs 3.0 argument :augie

Now to find a 3.0 manual.....

thanks for all the replies - I've just paid my tenner :clap
