Hi, I just want to know some things about veg oil, so here's my questions

Does the engine or fuel system need any modifying to use it?

That's the difference between WVO and SVO ?

How do I get it, where from?

Is it all legal

Do I need to do anything to the veg oil before putting it in my tank

Does it work on petrols engines too or just diesel

Does it improve power

Does it improve mpg

Are the costs of running veg really that noticeable

Is their any downsides so running veg?

Hi 96 terrano

You will find many posts on this subject, just do a search, i myself use ktc veg oil from makro £18 for twenty litres. I put 60 litres of oil to 20 litres of diesel mixed in the vehicle and shake vehicle and that is it, no additives.try 20 lts of oil in a tank first then build up. you will get plenty of advice.

Hi, I just want to know some things about veg oil, so here's my questions

Does the engine or fuel system need any modifying to use it? - put an inline filter just before the main fuel filter as a precaution.

That's the difference between WVO and SVO ? one is waste oil the other new oil

How do I get it, where from? - ask the wife Farm foods is best at 90ppl (after using their 10% voucher)

Is it all legal - Yes as long as you use less than 2500 litres per rolling 12 months

Do I need to do anything to the veg oil before putting it in my tank - yes buy it

Does it work on petrols engines too or just diesel - Lol!!!!!!!!!!

Does it improve power - no

Does it improve mpg - no

Are the costs of running veg really that noticeable - yes 90ppl vs 137 ppl = 33% cheaper

Is their any downsides so running veg? - no

i would use about 80% veg/ 20% diesel at the moment. You can go up to 100% in the summer when the overnight temps increase.

Thanks everyone for the info, I dunno, just somthing I was pondering:sly

kewl! I've seen the vegi boost but never tried it. is it noticeably better than without?

deffo worth trying it. just get a decent funnel first, or buy the smaller bottles from Farmfoods

always use 100% rapeseed oil and check they doesn't contain E900 which is basically a silicone and is NON COMBUSTIBLE. It wont cause any major damage to your engine but it will cause symptoms such as loss of power, stuttering and will clog up fuel filters very quickly, they use E900 as an anti foaming agent and oil that contains it is usually labeled as long life

Interesting R1cho, as that's usually added to the cheap soya oils, maybe that's why it always seems worse. I had assumed it was down to soya being more viscous.

Rapeseed definitely runs better, and Tesco's 5L veg oil' bottles are rapeseed if you look carefully at the label.

As to Ryan's Q about costs, well your truck takes 80L diesel at £1.34 ish a litre (£107.20) and 80L of veg from Tesco will be £80 so each and every tank will save you £27.20. Obviously if you go down the WVO route and you manage to get a good supply for free then you can save SO much more :)

Legal - yes, keep a record of how much you use to prove that in total for the last 12 months (i.e. always exactly 12 months back from the day they ask) you have used no more than 2500L of veg in total. Any more than 2500L of veg and HMRC will want fuel duty to be paid on the lot.

I run my maverick 50/50 anything more than that it seems really sluggish:sly

veg oil Q&A

I run mine on 80% oil and 20% unleaded in the winter and at the moment it's a 90/10% mix. Seems to run well on it, don't notice any difference between this mix and straight diesel so in my book no difference means its ok. (Hopefully).

I was running mine 80/20 from farmfoods until this week when they ran out and don't appear to be re-stocking just yet :doh

Tesco have sunflower oil 5ltr bottles 2 for a tenner at the moment. though if you look in the ethnic aisle they usually have rapeseed 5ltrs 2 for a £10 as well.

All I can say on this issue is I bought my latest off road motor with half a tank of bio in it (do not know the exact type/details) it stank like a chippy and would not pull the skin off a rice pudding and did not start as easy as it does now on red derv, only last week at Slindon someone asked me if I was running Bio and I have had this motor for many months, and I do PnP sites two times a month, not a lot of miles but the bio is still in there, Rick
