Just how well can they run on cooking oil, im very tempted to try it but dont want to clog up anything.

Come on guys, its advice time and we all know how you love that....:sly

mine is fine on 100% veggie

at mo running 33/66 for cold starting.

Ive also fitted a heat exchanger to help running. though not realy needed.

DO NOT STICK USED VEG OIL IN YOUR TRUCK

Its chock full of shite, chemicals, water, animal fats and bits of dog etc.. (depending where you got it LOL).

SVO which is Straight Veg Oil, i.e. clean and brand new is 100% fine. You won't clog anything and it runs a bit quieter and smoother to boot. nrapeseed, sunflower or boggo vegetable oil will do.

Home-brew bio-diesel is another matter - it takes waste veg oil and treats it with chemicals to turn it into a useable fuel.

BUT after a tank or three all the scum and shite from the fuel tank and system will be deposited on to the fuel filter and if you're lucky, won't block the fuel pump. Quality also depends on where you get it...Makeitfit has been running it for a while with no apparent problems apart from two filter changes.

OLD ENGINE OIL - personally not for me, I guess it will work after a fashion but (i) will probably be smoky and (ii) will be full of contaminants and possibly metal particles which won't help your pump....

Are you telling me if I can get cheap brand new drum of veg oil, I can put it straight into my tank ?

I am interested..... do I need to heat it ?

Yes you can and no you don't. Simple as that.

In summer you can use almost 100%, I usually stick to 50/50. The only problem you'll get is in winter, with high ratios of SVO, it will be a bit lumpy on startup but it soon clears.

Just give it a go. :thumb2

thanks

So without making any changes :

- during the summer 90%
- winter time 50% SVO

So from reading it can be solve by installing a fuel heater

I need also to change oil filter more regularly (5000 miles ?)

Is it just what I need to know ?

Down side is Veg oil is £20 for 20 lts, so your saving £6. for what i use the truck for it aint worth it too me, i put £40 in it on Jan 4th and its still got 1/4 tank left in it.My niece has been using it to hang her horse rugs on for the last 2 weeks.:doh

well just stick that £6 in an envelope to me, I'm not proud LOL :thumb2

Locteau, youll find a lot of of "experts" coming out of woodwork on tweb sites and a lot of what you read is opinion, theres very little precise science around. Some people latch onto a web site and thats there bible, always search for loads of sources and look for the common theme. Youll also see some bad engineering being proudly touted :thumb2

Its your truck and each engine could react differently to its food being changed :D

Best bet is do a search on here and make your own mind up.

Having been the prophet of doom the T2 is probably one of the best to test it out on, I reckon it'd run on meths and pig piss.

The basics are correct engine (2.7) a suitable pump fitted to your vehicle (bosch if my memory serves me correctly), and decent air temperature so it doesnt thicken too much before you start adding mods.

Then add the oil a bit at a time. Say 20% to start and look for problems or bad running at each stage then build it up.

Good idea may be to only run your tank about half full for a while so if it does start running badly you immediately chuck in some diesel and millers to the brim and normal service should resume.

I ran through the winter on close to 100% svo most of the time. I used a carefully placed preheater. No probs. Its easy , good value and smells great.

I fully agree with Paul about avoiding waste oil. It really is shite. Apart from anything else therell be microscopic bits of batter and water from the cooking process :thumb2

Irrespective of what you hear it is also completely lawful up to a certain level of use (the actual figure escapes me but the volume would give you around 12 000 miles a year on 100%) but is a virtually unenforceable regulation in any case :nenau

Have fun :thumb2

Agreed :thumb2

the cynics would q off the forecourt to save £6 at the pumps. Look at the excitement when Tesco give folk a voucher for a measly 5p off each litre :D

The savings are actually still much better than that anyway. You can get 20l for around £15 if youre prepared to buy several or shop around :thumb2

VEG OIL - you've missed the boat, it's a;; skyroketed in price and is as expensive as diesel :doh

it happened over night! the average supermarket price for the cheapest brands of veg oil is now £1.30 a litre, Aldi £1.19 - not worth it anymore :nenau

I'm back on straight diesel from tomorrow :(

yep, but at these prices it is actually more expensive than the diesel from ASDA and i have to get out and walk into the shop to get it :doh

if the price comes down, i will use it again :thumb2
