cant you get away with just new seal, you might be able to fit from top by relecing cap and putting piston tdc to stop valve dropping, done that on many times days past.
In my experience new valve stem seals do the job. I had a Manta GT/E that would give a puff of smoke either on start up when hot or after the engine was on the over run.
As it had done 120k miles and had a timing chain clatter I decided to take the head off and do the valve guides when replacing the timing chain & wheels.
When I took the valves out I checked the stem diameters against the new specification in the workshop manual. I was amazed to find they were all within the manufacturers tolerances.
I had costed having new guides but as it was expensive & the valve stems showed so little wear I just fitted new seals. Never saw another puff of smoke after that !
You generally dont see stem seal wear or valve guide wear on a diesel until the head is removed and stripped and you can physically see them. After all diesel is heavy oil and you dont really notice the extra smoke as you would in a petrol, Its head off and stripped down to do it.
This is a Volvo v40 D6 ive just finished at work, if you look where the valve is removed you can see the bottom of the guide so you have an idea.
