Hi guys I've been having some right bother with the ecu/electrics/engine on my 2.4 maverick....SO
I've got this ford V6 2.9 out of a sierra and wondered 8) if I could fit it instead of troublesome lump I've got now???
Then I could have some fun with the torque and run it on gas.
Anybody got any idea about mating the V6 to the nissan gearbox :?

sounds like fun.

the old ford essex 2.8 v6 was a popular conversion with the landy
brigade esp. into lightweights where easier to fit than rover v8 for
space and slightly less torguey to kill transmission as quickly.

as recall was fine as not in a rover association club and wanted
to trial it.

think ian ashcroft is big name in motor swapping game, lr wise.

just a thought but isnt transfer box in r20 seperate to main box,
perhaps use the sierra box as well. as easier to then adapt to
transfer box. another technique used by the swapping brigade.

2.8/2.9 ford V6 is the cologne engine, 3.0 V6 is the essex.

In the sierra its injected so you'd have all the comlications of fitting the fuel injection system and wiring the ECU etc.

The transfere on the R20 is bolted into the side of the gearbox, rbrt I think you're thinking of stuff like the SJ where the transfer is behind the gearbox, with these you can actualy run 2 transferes for super low gearing. I believe people use the SJ transfere in conjunction with an LDV gearbox for some zuki projects.

The sierra did of course come in 4x4 guise with the 2.8 and 2.9 engines. The box and transfere for that are a similar layout (ie bolted into side of gearbox) but whether it would be possible to graft the R20 transfere on to the side of a Type 9 4x4 or MT75 4x4 I really don't know. All things are possible but I suspect it would be major engineering.

nice one hb, didnt know of side/behind issues. just good memory of truck tricks over years while waiting to have another one. guess as you say if on side would rule out my idea in 32s'gearing thread rule out 2ns crawler lo box after all.

I've got all the ecu stuff and I'm told it's only a few of the wires needed to make it work, but importantly hardly any emmision control stuff to worry about.
My main concern was to "try" and mate the cologne to the existing box/transfer etc.
Maybe some kind of adapter plate?
I did have the rest of the 4x4 bit of the sierra but the transfer part was awol, and the bell housing is all one piece, so it got binned.I dont think they're that strong for off road work!

If its a 2.9 would probably have had a MT75 4x4 box attchede which are same as Cosworth bar the bellhousing so easily up to the job - but ho hum if you've binned it.

As well as an adaptor plate you'd need to know if the input shaft on the nissan box is long enough to reach into the spigot bearing in the end of the crank on the ford engine and also wether it is a compatible diameter. If smaller can be bronze bushed, if larger needs shaft removing an macining.

The adaptor plate itself can be marked up ad drilled at home, its just the cutting out that you'd need to have done for you. A no one has done it before ( to my knowledge anyway) there won't be anything off the shelf I'm afraid.

Can't imagine why you'd want to put on of those god awful lumps in anyway, make great boat anchors as they're very heavy but they're thirsty and not really all that powerful. If Iwere going down that route i'd look to use one of the later scorpio cosworth 24v units then all the work might be worth it.

Have you put a timing light on it yet to check the advance - details are in the workshop manual.

Funny you should mention the 24v cosworth as I've got one of those ready to go in my cortina!
The god awful lump of a sierra engine just happens to be sitting here too. Thats the only reason really.
The timing is spot on according to the manual, didnt advance it any further though as still not cured the bl**dy faults!!
Seem to be spending so much time getting nowhere thought might as well go a bit loud!
Any other engines that are cheap and powerful you have in mind?

Cheap no - powerful yes. Skyline GTR 2.5 mates up to Patrol 2.8 box if that gets you thinking......

8) whats the chance of ebay turning up a skyline write off
Would a Skyline R34 STS V6 be an option 8)

Always loved the sound of the V8
Anybody know of a g/box conversion or other npackage that might work?

As far as I'm aware all Skylines are inline 6's.

Theres a thread running on Difflock about this conversion on patrols (theres a few been done) have a look there for more details.

I have seen a terrano fitted with a 2.5ltr bmw straight 6 on a web site the main problem he had was the sump as there is very little depth in the engine bay due to the axle.
