no but USB is the way to go, I have a bluetooth one which came with something I bought and always have problems with it.

What Fez said :thumb2 I had a bluetooth one and did work, but not always, and you can bet the time it fails is exactly where you need to turn off somewhere :augie

Try this one. GlobalSat BU-353 WaterProof USB GPS Receiver (SiRF Star III)
http://http://www.amazon.co.uk/Glob...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343926543&sr=1-1

I have been using one of these for 2 years. Excellent bit of kit. magnetic base, picks up the satellites really fast.

"cant get the link to work, just put a search in amazon"

Fantastic!! For the extra £5 I'd rather get that and you all know what my next question is going to be

Mapping software? Whats the best to compliment this receiver? I'm flexible and have a Mac, IBM Thinkpad with Linux and a Toshiba Tablet with Windows 7 on.

Before you buy make sure the device will be recognised, and don't forget to install gpsd from synaptic then run dmesg | grep tty in a terminal. Another good one is Roadnav.

Right well after spending about 4 hours researching and downloading things lol, I have found a great combo

I've decided to use my Windows Tablet Laptop and use Global Mapper 13 with 471 .qct Memory Map 25k OS Maps :D just waiting for the last few hundred to all download :D, I'll upload some pics later of it in the car :)

I need to find a good position for the tablet as I'm going along and also need to test the GPS functionality of the software when my USB GPS Receiver arrives

I'm sure I could sort you guys out for the price of a CD and postage if you know what I mean ;)

You're right, a tablet is probably the best way to go for driving and walking. David.

I'll whack some pics up later and you can make your own mind up :)

Right as promised here is the software in action, I wasn't actually in Ambleside but after being there not too long ago I decided to use this one for an example as there is plenty terrain info for the purpose of this example :)

The red "X" that I've put on there is exact same one that is used when then GPS is in use, I can't express enough how accurate the GPS is and cant wait to use it for real

If any of you would like this software drop me a PM, in total with 32 bit and 64bit Global Mapper installation files and just over 460 25k OS Maps it comes to about 10.7GB so will have to be burned over a couple of DVD's all you will have to do is source a laptop and a GPS Reciever, I actually went with the Maplins one in the end as I'm impatient and was the same chipset as the other one anyway

What do you think?

I think that there was an android app that allowed you to open .qct files but it was removed from Android Market for whatever reason (probably copyright infringment)

I'm sure you'll be able to find the .apk from somewhere and then it should literally be as easy as smacking the .qct's on the memory card and browsing to them
