Hi chaps,

Ok - day ruined yesterday. Car is in with dealer to get the glow plugs changed (all knacked). Phone call to say one has snapped, and head has to come off to be heli-coiled. :doh :(

I KNOW the head gasket kit is going to be an arm and a leg here. Does anyone know a good aftermarket source for bits ? Phoned Japarts and they were as much use as t**s on a bull.

Looking for a head gasket and kit and 18 bolts (why 18 I'm not sure).

Time is of the essence.

The engine will start and run with 3 glow plugs, as long as they don't leak ..
So if the head isn't off yet, at least you could run it on 3 new, unless bits have gone into the engine, or the seal is compromised.

Milners in the UK do gasket sets, worth a call.
I think they have to replace all the head bolts, as they stretch.

Thanks rustic - didn't think Milners would have but they do and the BIG saver is the head bolt kit - Nissan want £225 and Milners want £34 :clap

gaskets didn't work out massively different with shipping.

This is a big help though.

:bow

All sorted, Milners bits including shipping to the frozen north saves me over £200 and The dealer has been as good as and given me nearly 20% discount on all the labour. It's just time now - walking sucks at this time of year.

I have always had good service form Milner and the parts they have supplied for me have been good:thumb2

Did the mechanic (who is being so good to you) snap the glow plug off through his incompetence ? And you're paying for it ?

Who can say if it was incompetence or "just one of those things". It's been in there over 7 years, steel in an ally head ..... yes I guess things could have maybe been done differently but do I want the fight to prove it ?? No one is perfect - had my share of :doh on hairyplanes which works out a bit more expensive :augie If I lose I stand to lose big.

They are the Nissan main dealer and have been very fair with me in the past including replacing blown steering pump pipes for nothing "because they should have seen them the first time" - tell me a dealer in UK who would do that.

Also there are the "local" factors; I don't speak the lingo so arguing gets interesting; everyone knows everyone and reputations travel fast - they screw me and word gets round, I throw a major wobbly on them and word gets round; it's all about compromise - they let you supply all your own parts (show me a UK dealer who will do that) and will negotiate a middle way.

I reckon I'm paying about 50% of the whole compared to if they wanted to take the "by the book" invoicing line.

I need the car back as fast as possible and I don't feel I am getting shafted ( trust me I don't do shafted !! Ask Mitsubishi UK :naughty :sly). My view is sometimes life bites you in the arse.

Don't be too hard on the mechanic as glowplugs do snap off in the head........replacing glowplugs is a gamble every time I change any for friends and I will always warn them about what could happen. If they were copper greased when inserted from the factory them this would help a great deal in the first place.
