I've just replaced the shoes on the rear of my '96 T2 after just 6k miles since they were last renewed. The wear pattern is most unusual. There appears to be excessive wear and even disintegration of the friction surface, mostly on the inner side of each shoe. This is something I've never seen before and suggests to me that either my brakes have been mis-aligned or the quality of the friction material is poor.

I'll attempt to attach a couple of images.

Any suggestions as to how I might avoid this happening to my newly installed shoes?

Are your wheel bearings ok, I had to have one replaced when gear oil was leaking out?
If not the bearings, then I believe there are 2 different rear shoe sizes.
You may also have to replace the drum, as this would have worn as well.
Hope this helps.

are your hold down clips/springs ok ,is your brake drum worn unevenly? is the remaining material firm or crumbly?

Thanks to Rustic & Ssteve

Wheel bearings don't appear to be a problem no leaks or rumble. Re hold down clips, perhaps they could be stronger. Drums appear not to be worn unevenly, I've replaced them just in case.

The remaining material, on the now removed shoes, does seem to be 'unstable'. I cleaned both brake assemblies about three months ago but when I re-examined them recently, prior to replacement, they did seem inordinately worn, that's why I renewed them.

I'll give the new kit time to bed in and re-examine after 500 km.

Thanks for your responses.

what did you clean them with 3 months ago ?

Hi Ssteve

I just used a brush and air hose to clean them, no chemicals. The main reason I exposed them was to take up the slack in order to adjust the handbrake, I cleaned the shoes and mechanics while the drums were off. The lining material seems to have broken down and become crumbly, when I replaced them it was possible to dislodge the material with a stiff brush. Weird!
