Unrelated but help needed

Mrs has a renault clio 1.5dci which appears to have aquired a humming type noise when above 20mph coming from the front drivers side wheel. This noise doesn't appear to change when turning left or right. Anyone got any idea what this could be???

From experience I'd go with possible tyre noise: worn, uneven worn, tyres can make all kinds of noises.
Wheel bearings getting worn.
Drive shaft.

As said but if the wheel bearing has gone check if it's seperate. I used to have a Scenic with the same engine and each time pads were done the disks also needed changing but the disks came as a unit with the hub and bearings.

Also there's a Renault Forum which is pretty good too which may also be able to help. Saved me a few quid but have to say it's first and last Reno I ever had, can't believe the things that went wrong with it. In fairness it was a nice drive and that little engine seems to sip diesel not gulp it :lol. I also know of people that love their Renos and have had several. But this is another story lol.

swap the front wheels over if the noise moves too its gotta be the tyre

Thanks for all the replies gents, the car has alloy wheels (if that makes any difference. Recently changed the pads and discs so happy it isn't that. Shall be fitting new tyres tomorrow as they are looking a little low. Fingers crossed that stops the problem :thumb2

Was the noise there before you changed the pads and discs, if not, then if it's only happened since changing, could be that.

Check wheel is on correctly, as mentioned move a wheel, see if noise moves with it.

Right, got the tyres changed and it appears not to have changed the noise. The car steers in a straight line without any vibration in the steering wheel etc. The noise is noticeable above 20mph and doesn't appear to get louder the faster you go.

I shall have a look at the discs incase they are warped.

If the discs are warped you would get the pedal judder at low speeds when braking. Not familiar with the Renault front end but I would be looking for a drive shaft clip catching inside the hub or when changing the discs did you upset the wheel bearings. Are the front ones adjustable ? If too tight they will hum. Is there more than one front CV joint something at the gearbox output end?

Reading the above posts reminded me of our Austin Ambassador, it also happened in Austin Metros, there was a whining coming from the front wheel.

I changed wheel bearings several times until I discovered the fault....
On the outer oil seal of the drive shaft was a wired type spring, that looked like a naked curtain wire that was around the lip seal on the inside, and this over time came off and dropped into the bearing.
Solution... if it came off once... then I discarded it, no more whining.

I avoided driving through deep water.

Renault may be different ?
