There I am, pootling about locally when I make a slight turn right and a hideous grinding screech occurs somewhere low on the offside.
Look for casualties: No bodies.
Look for debris: All nearby scenery intact.
Gently check car behaviour: Nothing unusual.
Drive on for about a quarter mile. Apply brakes. Mangled banshee noise again.
Same checks: Nothing.
Pull over and check underside, nothing untoward to my unskilled eye.
Off to Swifts Motor Services. Take mechanic for drive. Mak behaves perfectly until last right hander, then more godawful noise.
"That should be easy to find." Says mechanic.
Mak goes onto ramp and I go for a smoke.
"It's your side step." Took him less than five minutes.
It's not the bar or mounts of the side step, it's the mounts for the alloy plate that acts as the surface of the step. They'd corroded and sheared to varying degrees, the noise coming from the rear of the step when the vibrations hit just the right resonance.
Step plate removed and scrapped. Side step bar remains. Can be fixed eventually but at least it wasn't horrendous mechanical nastiness.
Oh, the nearside step is fine and both are Nissan standard units.
