On a more serious note, I'm not struck on the “why not diy” page on their site . For one thing whilst the “professional” waxoyl may kill off some existing rust, so does the retail version, funnily enough that’s not mentioned  also whilst waxoyl is superb, whilst YOU are doing the job you'll be able to spot the bits like your tow bar and get the hammerite onto it too.

I have a pressure washer, an electric spray gun (half price b&q £19) a waxoyl “probe” a set of axle stands, a set of ramps and a toolbox.

I wear a set of bog standard overalls which go in on a hot wash later, an old baseball cap and a pack of latex gloves. Then afterwards I have a hot shower! no problems ever encountered, certainly not for "weeks afterwards"

Waxoyl is expensive at some outlets but check out your local factors or oil merchants. Get white spirit to dilute for spraying then donate one summer Sunday afternoon a year to diy.

That’s what I’ve done for many years and kept corrosion at bay. Having only had the Terrano a couple of months its had one good “sprayover” underneath but by next year I’ll bet it’ll be easily as good as their work and more to the point I’ll KNOW that.

Save your money mate, for that price you could buy all the stuff to do it yourself including a posh pressure washer and spray gun

Also judging by the photos they look to coat everything - and not eveything wants coating especially rubber bits but aldo I'd rather have paint on most of the suspension etc as stuff that been coated in waxoyl is horrible to handle even years later - I'm not a great fan of it in generalunless you get it on in the first few years of a vehicles life and so can turely seal it otherwise you'll more than likely be sealing n existing rust and ome moisture to boot - not a good idea.

Hi hummingbird,

I've got to disagree with the sealing in problems perspective. I generally buy s/h cars then get cracking on the maint schedule which includes waxoyl. Doing this to more cars than I can count with out taking my socks off I've never ever experienced what you say, completely the opposite in fact.

However you do have a point on that if they pressure wash then seal. I usually waxoyl in the summer after the cars been washed and allowed to dry...thats usually days later.

I do agree with the yuck factor though, it can be horrible to handle even ages later :x

HI did the whole patrol 4 weeks even though the car is only 12month old I used 2 10l tins black waxoyl and 1 2.5 tin of black underseal
got every where, cover the drive first ramps on the front wheels axle stands under the rear on the dolly under the car 7hrs job done...
wont have to worry for the next 24month used the paint on waxoyl under seal in places like tank cover cross member any where likely
to come in contact with the ground and around wheel arches where stone chips might occur.
be prepared to touch up when necessary i recently when off-roading and took a challenging chalk hill climb with lots of ruts the gearbox cross bar took a lot off knocks and was badly scathed up 5min under the car good as new

Having done this on my T2 twice over the 6 years i had the motor since new and will be doing it to every car i own from then on. much easier to work on stops all nut and bolts from rusting on yes can be a bit messy when servicing
good luck
p.s (warm the tins well before using)

under body shultz

i use underbody shultz.you do need a compressor and a shultz gun to do it though.local cheapo whearehouse sells the shultz in 1ltr tins for 3 quid each.they fit straight onto the gun then its just point and shoot.on the gun i have got you can adjust the amount of underseal that comes out so you can avoid spraying everything.did everything with 2 ltrs of the stuff and i did put a good coating on everything.took about 2 hours to do the job start to finish.used to do it for a living in a bodyshop and we charged a couple of hundred quid for about an hours work and that going back about 10 years.

see us poor folk in wales use old engine oil and white spirit through a garden sprayer, no sooner than 2 weeks before mot,,,, rust stopped all horrors hidden and don't lock in the moisture ...job done

Many Thanks

to all your surggestions have decided to bite the bullet save some money and have ago me self

Guys a few years back i had a cabrio gti golf on a c plate

there wasnt an ounce of rust on that car.. under the engine bay it was coated in amber wax oil.. so it does work ! the germans were putting it on back then.

Guys i wax oiled the chassis and floor of my disco , 90 and fourtrak .. im gonna do the t2 i will take pics .. its a bloody messy affair but if anyone wants it done il do it for half that price !!!

under coating

hi just bought a 2005 terrano which has a lot off rust on chassis going to scrab wire brush then wash off but whats best to cove it with????????????????? thought waxoil was t prevent rust i need something to kill the rust and prevent protect afterwards any ideas many thanks

My 2p would be, dont bother with waxoyl, it is too soft, and washes off.

Dinitrol is the only thing to use. Yes it is 2x the price, but it doesnt wash off, stays as a rubbery coating, and the minging smell does linger for more than 24hrs unlike waxoyl!

Make sure you fill the sills, and the front cross member under the radiator !

I get mine from here: http://www.rust.co.uk/dinitrol-products.cfm or ebay.

Same here... change oil every 6k, old oil drained out gets sprayed underneath. Leaves nasty oil stains for a couple of days so I dont park it on the drive for a while after! :thumbs :lol

i use old engine oil it dont cost anything but you will get in a mess, i leave the Terrano off the drive for a few days,it also soaks into the rust well????

Thats the oil I use, comma 10-40 semi, I also change oil and filter every 6000 miles, its easy job and not expensive, the engine feels better and hopefully the engine will last longer. regards bri
