Underseal/Waxoyl

Hi

Im going to underseal my T2 can someone tell me the best way of doing this. I have done searches on the net and this forum but am a bit confused. Whats best to use on the chasis underseal or waxoyl? I want to do a proper job as I plan on keeping this for a few years.
Any help much appreciated

DON't use underseal!!!!!

it dries then cracks, the water gets in then stays there rotting everything!

Wire brush then get some Chassis Black enammel... a good lashing of this then a spray of waxoyl.

i'd just use waxoyl, I can't see the point of painting then adding waxoyl ontop.

Does the chassis black enammel prevent rust that you have painted over?

Cheap electric spray gun, 5 litres of waxoyl ,5 litres of white spirit and a sunday afternoon

Waxoyl every time! I used to restore old motorbikes, always treated the underside of mudguards to Waxoyl as they used to rust if you breathed heavily on them! Had to remove the Waxoyl from a front guard that had been accident damaged to repair it, not a trace of rust after 3 years of being ridden in all weathers. Done most of the underside of my T2 with black Waxoyl.

Cheers for the replys so far. I was originally looking to jus waxoyl it I was going to buy the proper spray gun for it. Is it worth painting before hand or is that a pointless exercise?

Also whats the best way of cleaning it beforehand? I was thinking of steam cleaning it and leaving for a few days to dry. is this right? sorry for sounding like a numpty but never done this before

Done most of the underside of my T2 with black Waxoyl.

Personal ting, id rather see it all nice and black. Years back when they only did it on clear i used to water down some underseal with white spirit, mix it with the waxoyl and slap it one

Saved our drive once they brought it out in black as standard

No more than Waxoyl on its own,
By preventing the water and oxygen from getting at the Iron to enable oxidisation, but the enammel paint is tough as hell and don't chip too easily:clap

if you're really fussy use Finnigans No.1 it neutralises the rust and primes prior to painting:bow

I will steam clean my chassis on a warm day then let it dry(Doesn't take long anyway as the chassis will be warm from the cleaning )
They sell waxoil in cans which you can connect up to a shultz gun HERE .............You will need a small compressor though.
Lay a load of cardboard or old dust sheets under the motor and spray away (I tend to loosen any rust with a wire brush and get some rust killer on any bad bits before I start.Get the tube into all the holes you can find............helps to warm the waxoyl up first to make it runnier or add a little parafin to it but on a warm day it's usually thinner anyway.I do all my vehicles and it gives me great satisfaction knowing that I can try and keep the rust bugs at bay .

I have used GRAVITEX stonechip paint which you fit to a shultz gun and that is terrific but it's £7 a pot HEREDries very quick and leaves the chassis very well protected indeed.

There is also the 'mud hut building' approach!

Green lanes every weekend - no pressure washer - let the layers of gods good earth build up for a weather proof coating.

Please note this will not protect against the Toon Army's or Hurricaine's! NLOLBCQTM!

Many years ago I purchased a Waxoyl spray gun and after a couple of uses it stopped working.

Now I use a Wilkos or Aldi pressurised garden spray they cost around £5 and if you keep the container in a bucket filled with hot water they work just fine and after a couple of years you can bin them if they pack up.

I like the Black Waxoyl as you can see where you have missed !

I used a Jet wash to clean off the bulk of the muck with a wire brush for any remaining loose when its dried off. Much easier to do in the summer on a warm day as the Waxoyl stays thin. You can dilute with white spirit but then it takes longer to dry and the excess solvent can make the rubber bits grow.

Best job I ever did was when I was young and energetic when I painted the whole underside of my Mini with Fibreglass gell (excluding hoses) and the ultra thin glass fibre matting. When the gell hardened I then Wayoxled on top. Mini 1275 S was a 1967 F plate and I did this in 1977 when I sold it 10 years later there was no body rot and it never had any more replacement body panels.

Next car I treated was a 1984 new Astra GT this I treated first with white spirit based underseal all brushed on by hand as thick as I could. After a week drying out I then did a Waxoyl final sealing coat. I kept the motor for 7 years and when I sold the motor it had no trace of rot or rust. Trouble was the next owner probably reaped the reward of all my efforts.

i agree, the proper waxoyl gun is a waste of time, you can get black waxoyl to save painting it first!

Stand the can in a bucket of very hot (boiling wouldn't hurt) water first, but loosen the lid, and as Dave said thin it with white spirits.
