Hi all, i came to use 4 low today and was unable to push down the gear selector down to get it in. it seems to go into 4 high as the light comes onto the dash and can feel the front wheels grabbing. any ideas? many thanks, jim.

did it go into N ok? then did it push downwards ok before moving down to 4L?

oh ok....but did you try to push down on the stick, before moving backwards to 4l?

yes, i think it goes 2h pull back 4h push down and pull back for 4l

hmm..i dunno then, we need Rick to advice i think, because its either just a bit stuck, or a problem with the selector perhaps...

Like most things in life..
If you don't use it you loose it..
When was the last time you tried it and it worked? :nenau
It might just be operator error. :doh MAKE SURE YOU ARE STATIONARY.

Tried my 4 wheel drive low approaching a steep downhill ice covered road across Cannock Chase this afternoon. I just love the control, feet off everything, and let the mav do the work, great...

I exercise it together with the auto hubs every 3-4 months.

We went to see the wild deer, and encountered over a dozen herds of 10 or more, in about an hour. :clap:clap

The last lot af snow we had and it went in no problems, will have a look tomorrow and report back, i do have to say i was trying to put it into 4l for my mate whilst leaning over passender seat. will have a sit in an try it.

Sounds like that is the issue. Hope it is,otherwise slide underneath and spray the linkages with WD40

agreed, it will be just one of those things where you just arent at the right angle, i bet its ok!

so glad have a proper transfer lever in these 'older' trucks.

really dont fancy the buttons and dials you see in the new
stuff.

my mate has a merc ml 270cdi and theres no lever at all.
ok its full time 4wd but the low range is a little button next
to the radio like a heated rear window switch.

dunno if low box locks centre diff as theres no control of
diff in high range, think all of 4wd is down to abs/traction
control.

he wants to go off road with us, perhaps houndkirk be a
good test and atleast no scratchy bushes....

what for?

mine rolls back when i have to select 4 lo .... i have to put selector in neutral , then transfer in neutral , push down to select 4wd lo( at this point it starts to roll ) then back in drive ..... or am i doing summat wrong ?

surely it only rolls if you are on a slope??.... I mean theres no drive so its not going anywhere otherwise....:nenau

Ha, we're in Wales...........everywhere is on a mountain :lol

which is why its God's Country!

I mean did Moses go up a 'slope' to get the ten commandments? Did the ark come to rest on a 'slope'? Did the ancient gods of Greece live on 'Slope' Olympus?

Course not....bloody mountains are whats needed!

Since you have an Auto, selecting park, locks the transmission. BUT if your transfer box is similar to the manuals, then selecting neutral in the transfer box will disconnect the drive to the Auto box. So it is free to roll.

Is there some interlock that prevents you selecting Neutral when in park and no handbrake on, as I would see this as a cause of concern, BUT you have to make quite an effort to select Neutral, not something that would happen by accident, not easily caught by a stray foot. :naughty
