Tyre wear

I recently took my 3.0 Sport to the tyre shop to have my tyres rotated. They always seem to wear on the front outsides (I'm told this is normal) so I get them to put the front left to back right and front right to back left. The fitter noticed this time that the front left had wear on the inside wall as well and suggested sorting before rotating. He said it could be bearings, track rod or steering box. The other front tyre is ok (just normal wear on outside).
If its the bearings, I'm told these can be nipped up a bit - is this easy enough to do myself or would it be expensive in the garage?
How can I tell myself if its the track rod ends? I'm a novice but keen to do as much as I can to save the pennies!
Any advice much appreciated.

Had a similar problem and it shouldn't be common is the answer. All tyre fitters say that.

My torsion bars are jacked up which changes the geometry and can cause probs (and have!), or as they said it could be alignment or loose bearing....the latter is detailed in the manual and apparently easy.

Wouldn't have thought any uneven tyre wear was normal. Changed tyres on my T2 recently and had about 50,000 miles on the tyres replaced. They were very evenly worn for the most part (granted one of them had some extra wear on the outside edge but I did have shock absorber and brake problems on one side). Did you get the tracking checked when rotating the tyres? If tracking is off it would wear tyres on one side or another. How is the air pressure? If tyres were wearing on inside and outside edges could it be due to low air pressure.

I've had about 6 sets of tyres on Mavericks over the years and they have always worn on the insides. I thought that was normal ;O)


BTW since raising the front on the torsion bars I no longer get tyre squeal on roundabouts so maybe thats the problem. Mine was always too low.
