Hello,
I've just joined the forum. I have a 2002 Terrano SE 2.7tdi which has only done 45,000 miles and I only manage about 21 mpg driving fairly gently. It doesn't seem to vary much if I am towing or not. What should a typical MPG be for this model. I also want to buy a workshop manual for this model. Can anyone advise which is the best place to get one from.
Thanks for your help

Hi Bryn and welcome.

If it's totally standard and you're driving it well then you should be getting around the 27-30 mark 25 is realistic and if you're driving it like you stole it then you'll easily see 21

I hope it's just a case that you've done the maths wrong or you're Gran Turismo'ing everywhere.

There's a full workshop manual available for the vehicle that is very very detailed with lots of exploded diagrams etc and way way more info on the forum, to be able to access the downloads area you must sign up as a member.

Stick around, I'm sure the guys will be here soon with a more than warm welcome :thumb2

I don't think you can actually buy a workshop manual for these, but as Banshee says there is a pdf copy in the members download area.

For that sort of mileage I would be checking air filter or MAF. How does it run with that sort of fuel figures, does it feel especially powerful, maybe the former owner has had it chipped.

The other thing to check is your speedo, these tend to be out by a good 10%, usually reading over, but maybe yours is reading under, so reporting less miles than you have really done.

If you are doing short journey work that's typical in my experience. It will up a few mpg in the summer on a half decent run 28-30 if you keep revs below 3k in top gear.

Welcome mate, change fuel filter see if that makes a difference, did mine the other day and it made z massive difference!

Thanks for your replies. I have now become a full member. I'm going to clean the MAF to see if that makes any difference. The air filter has recently been changed so it won't be that. I drive it fairly lightly but it may be the short journeys I do unless I'm towing.
I am not sure if I have downloaded the correct workshop manual., the one I downloaded was for the R20 series. Mine is a 2002 2.7TDI SE.
Would anyone know if I have a limited slip differential on this model and if I have automatically releasing free wheel hubs.
Thanks for your help

Hi

Check which MAF you have. I am sure others have said that if it is a Bosch make then cleaning can be a bad idea. Think they are supposed to be self cleaning. Others know more though.

Good luck.

All 2.7 t2' Are R20's and all have LS difs Yours is a later one so should have auto hubs.
Lazy Ferret was doing a thread detailing all the differences in the models ,but I don't know how far it got/ :nenau

as a 2002 think you will have fixed hubs, if you have a small dome on the center and 6 nuts on studs then = fixed, Rick

Hi, Yep the right manual.
But don't what ever you do press print!!

I did, its now in 5 big leaver arch folders.

Just print the few pages you need, when you need them , then keep

Poor MPG and workshop manual

Once again thanks for all your replies. At least I know that I have the right manual now!!

For cleaning MAF, check the workshop download here.
In short: BOSCH MAF, don't clean. Hitachi MAF: clean, but make sure to use ONLY contact cleaner.

I think I may have found my mpg problem.
Also red lining only sees 80mph on the clock whereas Parkers has closer to 96mph.

That's not right at all. I've only driven mine back from Huddersfield (around 60miles). I stuck to 70 on the M1 & the revs were no where near the red line
If my memory serves me correct, about 3000 at 70mph

3,000rpm = 50mph
3,500rpm = 60mph
I'll guess at 4,000rpm = 70mph
4,500rpm = 80mph :(

I've had triple figures out of mine on the flat with the 33's on, on veg
How's the acceleration?
