Hi all, can anyone offer me some advice please?

I have noticed lately that sometimes when i start my truck from cold i get a small cloud of smoke.
Also when i boot it (when warm) i notice a cloud of smoke.

Today when i was under the bonnet i noticed the turbo looked very oily, especially the rubber connecting hose from the turbo to the intercooler, that is actually blue....

Can anyone tell me whether the turbo is on its way out?
Is it a big job to remove and replace?
What sort of cost am i looking at for new/ refurbished?

Any help is much appreciated

Below are some pics of the turbo etc

all turbo's will pass a small amount of oil, if your oil consumption between services is small ie a litre or so then nothing to worry about, if the oil is showing on the outside of your hoses then they are leaking, more important to stop these leaks than anything else, if however performance is falling off then maybe the turbo wants looking at but it cannot be properly tested off load, cheapest method is to drill inlet manifold and install a boost gauge, then compare your results with others on here, other than that expensive garage job, Rick

i had oil like that on mine, was the blow by control valve that was blocked, i took it of and cleaned it, then cleaned the pipes inside and out and cleaned the intercooler aswell, problem went away

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.
Richo, what and where is the blowby valve?

cheers
stephen

If all that fails just get the turbo body refurbed, not expensive. Turbo is dead simple to get off bar one fiddly barsteward bolt

That valve must have jammed open on my last T2 so took the pipe that go's to the induction pipe to an oil catch tank & vented it to air & blocked up the hole in the induction pipe & didn't get any more oil covered hoses or intercooler:D

Aye your DIY heated seats were a bit OTT:lol:lol:lol the only down side was I did get oil building up on the inner wing & bulkhead but hey it helped stop the rust:lol I used to give it a wipe up about once a month before it dripped down onto the drive & on a cold day you could see the steam creeping out from under the bonnet once the engine was hot

Here my post when I did my Turbo...

I spent a lot of time going round the houses, trying to work out what was wrong with mine. Basically, trying to work out if it was a worn engine, over filling of oil, valve seals, breather system, or the turbo.

Take the bottom pipe off the front of the turbo, and have a look to see if there is any oil down in the turbo, mine had so much, it literally ran out when you took the pipe off.

As far as the breather system goes, there is a black pot at the front top of the engine, and this has a valve in it, so that when the turbo is working, it stops it from pulling the recirculated oil from the engine straight into the turbo, and allows it to collect in the pot, and dribble back down into the bottom of the engine. This valve fails, and when the turbo is working, it creates so much suction, it draws the oil fumes, and splashes of oil straight out the rocker cover into the turbo, and creates lots of smoke, I fitted a second oil catch tank to reduce this, but in the end, it did turn out to be the turbo.

Also, the inter cooler gets full of the oil, and it all runs back down into the turbo, mine took a fair bit of cleaning out.

the black pot is the blow by control valve :thumbs

Last time I priced up a new one from Nissan they wanted around £200 for it:eek::eek:it's plastic not gold:doh

I got mine second hand from a kind user on here..., but I have left the catch tank in place, since I went to all the hassle of buying and fitting it.

Mine was leaking oil at the top & where it attaches to the rocker cover pipe, opened it up but couldn't find a seal so super glued it back together as it kept comming apart well that fixed that leak:lol the leak at the rocker cover was a hardened O ring so wraped some PTFE tape around it & that one never leaked again:augie.
Once I fix my catch tank & it warms up i'll prob fit it onto this T2 once I find a spot for it as my last one didn't have ABS so mounted it there

I made up a dog legged bracket, and mounted it over the back by the wiper motor... I used an existing bolt that held other stuff on, and put the bracket under that.

Oh, and you see how bad the oil was in the turbo in this one, as well as the tank.

Urgent help needed

Hi all, i stripped the blow back valve off and the intercooler and the associated pipes and cleaned them all out.

the i put it all back together but sealed the pipe from the blow back valve to the air inlet and ran the car, all seemed well to start with then lots of smoke....and it stopped.
I then noticed under the car a pool of engine oil....

I think i have traced the oil coming from the dip stick as that is the highest point that oil is visible.

I then realised i had mis-interpreted the thing people were talking about with the blow back valve pipe and it shouldnt have been blocked off as this would then cause back pressure in the engine...

The problem is the motor wont start now....its turning over well but quickly drains the battery.

can anyone tell me what i have done and how to fix it please?

Any help or advice is much appreciated

I have to say i am a little concerned i have done some internal damage....unless anyone can shed any light on it for me?
