OK Everybody this is the trip to France Thread !
Many of you seamed to like the idea of a jolly trip over the channel, tools or no tools.I don't care, so here it is!
The show of hands and who is genuinely interested.
I have plenty of room here and have friends who run B&Bs
It could be you want to come when the ferries are cheep( between Easter and summer).

Everyone is sitting back, most i imagine, are thinking how they'd love to go too.

I would also like to go, wether or not i can is another question.

I suppose for me the question is how long, how far, and when?
And any lanes of course? :naughty

Firstly I will have to look where exactly we will be going to.
then of course plan which ferry would be most cost effective.and the price of tolls etc.

I know if its just dover Calais crossing Norfolk line is probably about the cheapest.
last time I used them I think it was only £40 return for a car and 4 people.
how far from Calais are you?
can you give us a link on a map of roughly where we would be going from there?
if its millions of miles it may be cheaper to get an over night ferry from plymouth

yep im up for it wife n 2 kids and tools. it wont be dover calais either iv been looking at crossings and its brittany we need to get to. im sure the cheaper earlier time of year would be best for most and our h?ost will tell us the best way to get therhow about early may?

I will try to give you as much information as possible, so you an make your decisions as to whether you are able to make it or not.
Obviously the UK side of the trip depends on where you live. If you live in Kent you wont want to go from Plymouth and vice versa, if you live in Devon you won’t want to travel to Dover. So I will concentrate on this side.
Firstly where are we? Chateaunef Du Faou, is in central Brittany ,department 29 Finistère.
So there are basically two routs Dover to Calais/Boulogne and Plymouth to Roscoff. The distance from Calais to Chateaunef is approximately 396miles roughly 7 hour drive. The distance between Roscoff and Chateaunef is 38 miles or 1hour 15 min.
The ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff is far more expensive than the Dover - Calais, but I have done both and by the time you pay for all the juice and the tolls there is not much in it. Plus I would rather spend 6 hours in the bar on a ferry than driving for 6 hours. Obviously the price depends on when you come . Forget school holidays unless you are minted! Best days to travel are mid week to mid week

Yes this root is still running but its a 2 hr 30min drive from st Malo to us,but if Portsmouth is nearer you could come this route. Also some people come Plymouth-Roscoff and go back st Malo-Portsmouth due to times of sailings, if they have a long drive UK side

Portsmouth is just a bit further than Dover but saves a longer drive from Calais, Zexell pump has two raised ridges running front to rear, with a pipe bulge at the rear, Bosch pump has a much flatter top with just a small circular raised bit, Rick

I have been iffing and arring as to what our holiday plans are this year.
this sounds epic.

may cost more. but to get there nice and fresh in the am hours counts for a lot.
and there is not a lot of driving to the destination.

Nearest port is Roscoff. There are regular overnight crossings usually leave Plymouth 10pm, arrive Roscoff about 7am then it's just over an hour to Chateaunef.

just had a quick guestimate for a 4x4 with 2 adults and on child travelling in mid june ish is around 300 return but a cabin will be extra

plus fuel from the midlands and backquick guess is 200.

so I can get there get back for a mid june week for 500 quid.

my passports are upto date I think.
we will need recovery and car insurance and personal insurance plus food.

im looking at £1000 without any spending money or emergency funds

I think personaly im looking at 1500 quid all in.

I think I spent nearly a thousand going wales off roading in july with camp fees and stuff.

I think im deffo up for this:thumb2

I don't know what I can offer you in return.
I have a boot full of tools.but little knowledge of mechanics.
but I don't mind getting dirty and under your truck to help in any way I can.
you can take bits off mine just to identify your problems.

I like cooking.daft as it sounds I like cleaning and washing dishes.
and me jac and young skye don't mind sharing 1 double between us.
of coarse I will have to donate towards any electric gas and other costs.

Don't worry about the in return bit just buy a bit of shopping and a few beers ,My misses is an amazing cook and loves to make curry's . If we can tinker with the car a bit in the evenings it's a bonus.
