Hi all

Car spent a week in the garage -still not repaired as the garage cannot find the Transmission control module (TCM) for the automatic gear box.

I have looked at the online manual and it is not where it says it is as, i am assuming that the manual is primarily for a terrano 2, there may be slight differences with a mistral.

I have spoken to a couple of garages and breakers and they all suggested similar locations.

I have spent hours upon hours on google and ask.com - no luck

I am at my wits end, cos at the moment the car engages 4 th gear and then drops out of torque converter lock and that results in loss of top gear.

could be goodnight vienna if i cannot get it fixed

so if any one has any ideas please post them

and if anyone has a definate location, picture or part number i will be endebted to them for ever

thanks and regards Paulp

Paul have a look at honestjohn.co.uk - theres a couple of auto specialists that he always recommends but can't remember their names. Might be worth a phone call?:nenau

Hmm. Is it strapped to the back of the engine ECU or up behind the radio? If not, then i'm outta ideas!

Regards the TC lock clutch, this would be speed or temp related- both have to be satisfied for a lockup condition. The 'box temp needs to be over 50deg C for it to enable, so the oil temp sensor would be my first port of call...

King Automatics in Epsom would be my ONLY recommendation. They would be worth a call for sure.

Thanks for the replies

please keep them coming

Thanks Timbo

Checked those - not there

Connectors M814 & M815 (the two white connectors top centre) are on the TCM, these appear from EL-254 to be somewhere behind the radio, midships...

The picture is from the Terrano R20 manual, yours being a Mistral, could be different???? I am afraid I really don't know the Mistral, but it could well be the same as the Terrano.

The reference EL-254 refers to the page number in the EL (electrical) section of said manual.
If you look at the page mentioned you should see that it is likely to to be somewhere below the windscreen in the centre... probably not far from the ECU.

The avatar pic is a VAG diagnostic device used on Volkswagen, Skoda, Audi, Seat... etc..........

TCM

Thank you very much

I have looked behind the heater but the picture shows the TCM to be between the steering column and the heater unit

I will check again

Any ideas what it looks like

Thanks for your help

No idea what it looks like... but it will have two 24 pin connectors on it.
Just a another random "box" under the dash... I would guess at the size of a small paper back book, maybe smaller?

Just noticed the reference I gave you is for LHD, the connector idents for RHD appear to have changed to M837 & M838 although the location would seem to be the same. Correct page is "Passenger Compartment RHD" EL-258.
Let us know where you find it, I may have to look for mine someday!

I've had a MkII and MkIII T2 auto dash apart completely a couple of times to access the ECU for my Tunit and never seen a seperate box for the gearbox, so I've always assumed its incorporated into the ECU, which would make perfect sense surely?.....but possibly not on the Mistral, it being an unknown quantity.....

It is going to look a lot like this, although the mountings may look different. The TCM is a physically common part used on many Nissan auto vehicles.

There's a ecu behind the ashtray area on my terrano, I think it's for the fuel system but that could be the area where the tcm is?:nenau are you 100% sure it has a tcm?

Just been out and checked mine...
It is bolted to the bulkhead just under the windscreen slightly to the O/S of centre. It looks a real bitch to get to as well as the bolts securing it would appear to come through from the other side of the bulkhead!

It carries the part number 31036 2X000 which is indeed the TCM for the RE4R01A auto box.

Behind the radio it is then!!

Just to confuse matters more; I have a Nissan doc "Trouble Diagnosis" for the RE4R01A box. I am not sure which specific model of the Terrano or variant thereof it refers to, but it shows another 2 possible locations for the TCM.
As Pual's vehicle is a Mistral it may be relevant.
Seems as though they hide these TCM's all over the vehicle!
