My honest advice - Toyota Hiace.........dry clutch, 2.4 tommy engine, they do the mileage. I think you have to think smart, and go with the best reliable basic truck you can!

Hiace clutch - £80

Wheel Bearing -£30

Agreed. You can still have a top spec elec window'd, air con'd 120bhp Hiace for 3/4 of tranny money.

Trouble is they aren't that common, much as I'd like one....think I'll have to look harder!

I'm also thinking about the option of getting an Ifor Williams Box Van, which gives me almost as much load space as a Tranny and more versatility, i.e. I can tow it behind the Terrano or a decent diesel estate.....

For half the six grand I was going to blow I could be looking at a brand new BV..

Oh decisions decisions....:doh

Well taking as one who sells vans for a living then it has to be the toyota hi ace for reliability no questions, the trafic drives much better much more car like and with the six speed box its great but like anything you can have problems with them all. I agree with the remarks on the transporter far to over priced for what they are.

Why didn't I find you earlier? LOL

After my earlier post I had a look around and Hiaces are, as I suspected, very thin on the ground.....and not that cheap either....probably a couple of grand more than the equivalent Tranny and all of the ones with a 2006/7 manufacture date had 90-100k miles on.....but then I'm assuming they can do some serious miles?

The BV is tempting, partly cos of price (and tax/insurance/MoT as Chris says) but also because of versatility. And I could probably lose £4k on a £6k Tranny over 5/6 years, plus tax and insurance of what, £600/year = £3600?, where the BV should still be worth at least 60% of its £3k purchase price, a loss of less than £1400 and no running costs against a total of £7500/8000 on a Tranny......

Did I just talk myself into it????

The BV makes sense to me, i have several trailers I use for different things, if you buy 'right' you needn't loose out at selling time and they don't eat anything when you aren't using them. AND you have plenty of storage space so parking one isn't an issue.

Its making more and more sense to me too.

After reading umpteen owner reviews of the 06-on Transit I'm less than impressed to be honest. If it was a van I'm settled on a Hiace....not quite the load space of the Tranny but unequivocally more reliable and thus economical to boot. Just have to settle with paying £1-2k more than the equivalent Tranny.

Looking at a new BV since s/h prices, especially on Ifor Williams, are a bit silly, as well as telling me they retain their value. The Ifor Williams BV85 is only a few inches shorter than the Tranny and comes in around £3k, so financially its a no-brainer. Just got to try and find one since IW only manufacture to order these days with a 6-week lead time....:doh

there's a few on ebay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_f...570.l1313&_nkw=bv85&_sacat=See-All-Categories

but if buying an ifor second hand make sure to have a good nosey at the brakes and cables :thumb2

Re buying s/h - also be sure to check the burnt through number, which can be found on the draw-bar with Ifor Williams on 01490 412626 (as distinct with the serial number on the pop riveted plate). They record the type/model of every one they manufacture against this special number. I once bid and won on ebay an IW four wheel trailer which turned out to have the burned through serial number of a horse-box, according to IW!!! It may have been an after market modification but the (allegedly unaware) seller agreed to nullify the ebay deal!
Bon courage CL

LOL they are always about! I've already got an LT85 that I biught new three years ago, which I'd have bought a canopy for that would have done the job for £400-500...but IW only do one for the LM85 which doesn't have dropsides and is two inches wider all round than the LT....bloody nonsense.

You'd be surprised what I get up to these days LOL

Transport is to ship a big load of exhibition kit, hire stuff from the interiors business, stuff back from France yadda yadda yadda......

He's gone to Jeepland or somesuch thing :thumbs
