i found this on an ausi forum and was wondering if it was possible and if so how? anyone had any experience with it?
I thought I'd add my sixpence worth, as comments relate that were from
another thread
Certain old models of auto trans can be push or tow started fairly easily,
they had one at least, oil pump driven from the back end of the trans so the
auto's oil pressure system which is used for control and communication
purposes got "powered up" by the back wheels turning. Therefore the
transmission suddenly realised the handle was in "2" and knew to engage that
gear
Most autos you'll likely come across nowadays cannot be roll/push/tow
started.....UNLESS.......
UNLESS that is your starter safety switch is defective (or you temporarily
bypass it)
The motor only needs to do a few turns in a row at good speed on the starter
motor, and this will drive the oilpump in the front of the trans, enough to
get control of the internal clutchy things that will then engage the gear,
which will allow the turning of the back of the trans to turn the front of
the trans which will then drive the front oilpump
Normally turning the key in "D" or "2" will do nothing, but assuming the
safety switch is bypassed, or has previously broken in a way that alows
starting in any gear handle position, Now get rolling at reasonable speed
down a hill or being towed at 25+ kmh, then after a couple of turns of the
startermotor and engine you'll suddenly feel a strong drag, just like
letting the clutch out in a manual car when push/tow starting it. Obviously
as soon as the front of the trans becomes turning at anything like good
speed the control oil pump thingy is upto full power within moments
If you need to start an old car in temperatures well below zero C then just
ask and I'll tell you how to do a 24 volt start without blowing things up !
