Tow bar electrics

In the next few weeks i'm going to start fitting twin tow bar elecs:augie Not sure if Nissan changed the wiring colours on the later T2's or not but did find the wiring diagram in the down load section so will work of that unless anyone knows of any changes which should be made:augie Never fitted any before so it should be fun:doh What i'm mostly stuck on is the split charging system to charge the caravan battery on the move & run the fridge. I know i'll need a relay but have no idea which one to get

This has prompted me to do mine actually, my twin plate has gone all rusty and it's only a few months old!!!!!

Also both of my rear indicators have packed in on the trailer, I've checked the bulbs and they are fine so either my trailer plug has got a loose wire or two or my towbar electrics have.

Either way, I'm going to be fiddling with wires :bow

Wiring

I do not post much these days but I can not let this one pass. Please do not use domestic wiring . The sleeving on domestic cable is not designed for the abrasion and fluid contamination of a vehicle. I have recently rewired two T2 for caravan 13 pin sockets and found these problems:
One with the correct 7 core from the 12S until it was tucked under the bumper where a domestic flex was twist wire and tape connected to a 3 core domestic flex :doh. The outer insulation was rubbed through to the inner cores and the twist and tape connections where corroding.
The other obviously had a problem with the relay because someone connected a switch using domestic cable - neat switch on the dash, the lack of insulated terminals tends to scare me. :question Would you connect a length of cable to the battery positive and touch it to the car body Do not try this.

http://www.polevolt.co.uk/, http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/ etc sell wiring by the meter and a fine collection of connectors. :clap I use Thinwall cable 2.5mm Yellow for the main feed. Universal Charging Relay TEC3M for switching. One tip I always use is to splat some Waxoyl on the back of the connectors inside the backshell, I have had tow sockets last over 12 years without problems. Tip 2 run the feed down the port side as you get a proper earth connection and all the lighting goes down that side.

Tip 2 run the feed down the port side as you get a proper earth connection and all the lighting goes down that side.

Oh i'm not that silly to use domestic cable:augie but will use a higher amp cable than is needed if I can get it better safe than sorry:thumb2 good tip about the waxoil but don't have any left but was going to give the back of the sockets a good coat of vaseline to keep water off the connectors.
Port side:duno: no nothing about boats etc so will have to google it to know if it's N/S or O/S:augie

I normally tin the ends of the wires before fitting the sockets. Then it get normal grease and pretty much fill the back of the sockets. Also give the mounting bolts a smear of grease too. This bit May not be suitable for the caravan nears with the groovy stabiliser tow hitch but I grease the outer connections of the socket where the plug goes too. Doing this bit May risk contaminating the stabiliser. I've not had a knackered socket for years.

Pass the Port

Port - Left - Red, Starboard (Stbd) - Right - Green :thumb2 Sorry, hold habits and all that.

Ships (Roman Galleys) used to have a steering paddle/ board (Steerboard) on the right side (because people are mainly right handed) therefore they tied up at the Port on the left side. The terminology is also used in the aircraft industry - the pilot steers on the right side the passengers enter on the left side :clap

2.5mm (thinwall) is good for 25A (max 28) - Relay is good for 30A - 20A Fuse should be good even for a modern Fridge and Charging cct.

4.0mm (thinwall) is good for 35A (max38) - 30A fuse.

You should be able to rest the fuse in the inboard fuse holder in the engine bay and get the cover on, this gives it a bit of protection.

My tip for the socket pins is good old dubs 40. Every couple of months just lift the cover and spray until it is dripping, wipe of the excess and close cover.

Good tip to tin ends.

Cheers Rob:thumbs Well I scored the other day & got a witter towbar for nothing, friends uncle had taken it off his old T2 & dumped it in the back of his garage & forgot about it. It had a tiny bit of surface rust on just a couple of bits so sanded it down & started spraying it today but had to stop due to the rain:doh was going to paint it black but the wife wanted it grey:augie if the grey looks bad once fitted it'll be coming of & getting painted black:lol
Time to start shopping for wire etc & get the number plate moved asap

This might be a daft Q:doh I was looking through the owners hand book & it mentions that there could be a indicator buzzer already fitted to the later T2's but it also says there may not be one fitted yeah I know confusing or what, so who better to ask than you guy's has anyone with a late model T2 found a factory fitted buzzer or warning light for a tow socket ? also whilst i'm at it does anyone know if Nissan changed the wiring colours at all on the late models

All my Terranos have had a beeper when the caravan is connected and automatically compensate the flash rate for the additional load :clap

Check the colour codes, the reverse light and fog light colours may be reversed from the manual colour codes.

Great sounds as if nissan did fit a beeper/buzzer then saves me having to buy one

Cheers, mine should also have it fitted then as it's a 55plate. Looked online at the price of the buzzers & thought they would be just a couple of quid not £8
