Any preference, or ones to avoid ?

I've tried all sorts and generally find you get what you pay for, although I've had a few surprises. Woolworths 50 piece bit set still going strong after 7 years - £4.99 in the sale ! Draper 3/8" ratchet (£15) fell to bits on me after about a minute.

I've had the same Hilka socket set since I was 17. Me dad nicked it out of a Volvo lorry for me. I've given it some serious abuse and it refuses to break.

Looking for a breaker bar (1/2" drive, around 2 foot long) but I can't find a Hilka one anywhere ?

Halfords advanced has the same policy as snap on :thumbs

Thats what i use ;)

my son " borrowed " my kamasa socket set about 10 years ago ... havent seen it since .... dont ya love kids ? ( hes 26 now :lol )

I tidied some of my tools into the garage a while back on the wife's suggestion:augie
Not found them since :doh
The ones in the kitchen are easy to find and keep clean :lol

I bought a kit virtually identical to THIS HERE and it's fantastic .In a case every tool you will need ,just drop it by the motor and everything will be there at hand with a quick flick of the lid.I am over the moon with mine and I have spent countless hours using the kit with no breakages or problems with any of it in 3 years.

bought a sealy socket set years ago and its still like new.

I bought a 2 foot Draper 1/2 inch breaker bar, it did exactly that twisted the head then sheared off, I took it back to the shop for a replacement, and that broke as well, but this time the side fork broke off.
I wish I had bought a 3/4 inch set.

I also sheared off a Draper 1/2 inch to 3/8 adaptor with a torque wrench at a very low torque, I recall it was a 6mm Allen head to torque up the Auto Hubs on the Mav.
Draper used to be good, but not any longer. I bought a Halfords imperial socket set (renshaw I think ) over 30 years ago, I think I have only worn out the 1/2" socket, the rest is ok, I have added metric sockets since.
There are too many cheap imports, you do get what you pay for.

My mechanic friend swears by Snap-On but has started buying certain tools in the Halfords Advanced range :augie don't know who put him onto those :augie & his very impressed as he purposely broke a ratchet & they exchanged with no receipt or questions :clap

stay well away from any thing bearing the silverline name blood awful stuff

Most Silverline tools come with a 3 year or even a lifetime guarantee, are they really that bad ?

Also I thought they were British made tools, or are they just British sold ?

king dick and britool, and most german tools, thems proper tools them are!!

ssteve

Halfrods Pro flexi ratchet spanners Priceless!!

They are superb arent they :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2 converted me to halfords tools if the price is right :D

On the subject of buying from them, Halfords are having a mega sale at the mo inc the pro range. I was after a new ratchet handle so started perusing.

Word of warning though, their pricing structure is all over the place Ive found it varies between on line and in store even between stores :doh.

What I was told to do was order on line to collect in store what you want because its often cheaper then when you go in there do a quick check before you go to the till. if its cheaper in store just buy one and cancel the reservation, if the on line price is best collect your reservation :thumb2:thumb2:thumb2
