I understand that the Terrano manual gearbox takes 3.6l of oil. I've just drained mine and filled a 5l container! I've refilled and have accidentally filled 4l. I stuck my finger in the inlet and the level is about an inch below. Bearing in mind I have the front up on ramps so may be the oil runs back towards the transfer box and gives a false impression that it is low.

Can putting in too much oil in the gearbox cause a problem?

I'm pretty certain that it is the gearbox I've drained: back from the sump is the bell housing and then about 12" from further back is a drain plug on bottom and above and forward on same side is the filler plug. Further back is the transfer box I believe which takes the rear and forward prop-shafts.

Thanks

It's generally accepted that overfilling the gearbox on a 2.7 is OK as it can quieten them down a bit when they develop the layshaft rattle :doh

Not sure on the 3ltr :nenau

Same gear box FS5R30A so should be okay in that case. Thanks.

gearbox oil

just changed my gearbox oil again tonight for the proper Nissan mt-xz gear oil part no ke916-99931 because comma spec oil made low gears notchey when cold it took just over 5 litres on level ground nice smooth gears again 2004 terrano 2- 2.7

Transfer box and gearbox should be separate so oil won't run from one into another :thumbs

Ignore the figures and fill until it's just oozing out the filler - that's when you've filled it enough.

I'd also be doing it with your truck level.

What he said... I put Comma, and some special stuff recommended by the motor factors into mine, but when cold she can be a real ***** to get into first, which is a pain as I have a hill start onto a junction less than 1/2 a mile from the house. Going into second and then back into first does not seem to help either in my case.

I would be interested to know where from and how much?

What they both said!!!! I want to do the swap if it packs in the horrible 1st issue!!!!!

Mmmm .... I've just used Comma oils for engine, gearbox, transfer, rear diff and just about to do the front diff. I must admit changing into first was a bit notchy in one attempt but fine since.
