Look up Splicing on Youtube... You will need to seal the ends, so it's not all frayed, then get a bluntly pointed stick, and off you go...

No, knots are actually a weakening factor in rope work, unless you use the correct ones. The rope needs to be back spliced into itself for at least 6 turns to maintain it's strength. If you get a thimble eye to match the diameter of the rope and put it through the eye if the hook (you will have to open the ends, pass it through then close them back again), this creates a radius rather than a bend in the rope itself, another weakening factor.

I hate those types of rope, I used one on my focus before to give someone a tow in the snow and the actual shackle snapped in half and was all corroded and white inside.

Guessing at what a thimble eye is I think you will struggle to get one though. Quick and dirty fix would be a figure of eight and a half hitch. Could always splice without the thimble eye too.

trim to lose frayed,melt to seal each end and untwist about 6ins then loop back on itself about 6ins then on rope force a twist the opposite way of braid and loop a section of the end through and do same for next strand and so on pulling through and tight each strand in order.
used to use a 12"spike on wire cables.

Problem with a recovery strap is if you intend to tow a fair distance the strap can rub and fray from the road.
